Without hearing the whir sound my first guess would be a wheel bearing.

it isn't a pulsing whir...doesn't sound like bearings i've had go bad in the past with other cars...but maybe?

it is only audible when accellerating.

do these thing pul a little to one side when accelerating

when letting go of the wheel and stepping hard it pulled to the right a bit...

nothing dramatic...just a little pull to the right.

thanks both of you. got the vin and ran it. had been in an accident. i think there is more to the front end than a strut...i'll pass on this one. there was a support bar (adjustable) in the front (in engine compartment) i thought it was a race thing...i think it was a bandaid. there is another sport...
