Re: 96 subaru legacy outback 2.2l blown head gasket

Sounds like it was overheated pretty badly. I'd lose some trust in that engine, but I have seen an EJ25D that was overheated so badly that the inner timing covers melted off the engine and the knock sensor was a pool of molten plastic. Some new HGs, and 10k+ miles later that EJ25 is still running gr...

Re: ESL Board for USDM 1st Gen Turbo Legacies

Because they wanted to keep ABS? Makes sense to me. As the owner of two daily driven old non-ABS vehicles, I will say that internet car guys always claim "they can outbrake ABS" but rarely is that statement true. I'd never delete ABS on a street car, chances are it'll stop the car way quic...

Re: automatic seat belts disabled?

They will still work properly in an accident. The seatbelt computer and power system only controls the power sliding of the chest belt when the door is opened and closed. It does not effect the locking or tensioning in an accident.

I'm happy to assist with locals wanting to install and tune the ESL board. I do road tunes with a focus on engine reliability for local GM and Subaru owners.

Well, I finally gave up and made a hacked up USDM console work. Might redo the black cloth in leather eventually.

Re: New to me EJ22T

I've never had a problem with solder connections, but I do proper mechanically strong lineman's splices with a dab of solder to hold it together and covered in weatherproof heatshrink. If I had no solder at all, the connections would still hold just fine. The worry when using solder is that the vibr...

No repinning. This is a cut and solder job transplanting the entire engine control section of the harness.

Re: New to me EJ22T

You'll take the body harness for the outback, strip the EJ25 engine wiring out of it, then take the EJ22T body harness and strip all the body wiring out of the engine wiring. Then, combine the EJ22T engine wiring into the Outback body wiring, making the necessary interconnections between the two. Yo...

This is what you'd be doing to make that option work. Definitely not optimal, but it would be doable.

Re: Single Diaphragm Brake Booster Upgrade Write-Up

Josh, I totally agree with your terminology point and the fact that brake "feel" is very subjective. I find I have difficulty quantifying the reason I like the dual diaphragm booster better, but I'll try. The dual diaphragm booster seems to result in a more communicative pedal. It is easy ...

Re: New to me EJ22T

The 22t is a good engine. I actually have an EJ22e bottom end under 2005 WRX heads and intake, with 18psi through a TD04 and an STI DCCD 6-speed. Well, used to have the 6-speed, I am selling the car so I put a 5-speed back in it. I have a soft spot for second gen Legacys, but I acquired the 2005 5-s...

Re: Single Diaphragm Brake Booster Upgrade Write-Up

Good write up, but I really dislike the pedal feel from the single diaphragm booster. I much prefer the dual diaphragm. There's a reason only the cheap cars got the single diaphragm.

To me, the single diaphragm booster hurts brake feel. It's definitely a personal preference type of change.

Found a 93 and 94 supplement on eBay, if I remember correctly the 94 supplement was basically only the R134a A/C changes and maybe a couple other tiny things. 93 might have included the airbag info. 93: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Subaru-Legacy-1993-Service-Manual-Supplement-/151972550507?hash=item23624...

It's entirely possible that the rear axles are the small spline only on automatics, since the auto has less shock load than a manual. None of the aftermarket parts companies seem to have a listing for different rear axles for any of those years though. Opposedforces shows two different axle part num...
