Re: Odd noise and play in shifter. Not the usual suspects.
I talked with my transmission guy who has seen a number of these with shift fork gates that open up over time. He's actually fixed a few of them before. He's pretty sure that's what is going on, so I'll probably have him fix it when I send the trans to him for an overhaul.

Odd noise and play in shifter. Not the usual suspects.
My '93 wagon has a 2003 WRX SPT shifter assembly in it with a shift joint that has around 10,000 miles on it (installed new when the shifter went in). I've started to notice an interesting noise coming from somewhere under the shift boot when the following conditions occur: 1: Full throttle. 2: Over...

Re: 2.5 Frankenstein possible with 9.5-9.7/1 compression?
I don't know the answer, but if you dug up the combustion chamber sizes, stock piston specs and played around with a compression calculator I bet you'd find the answer. Where might I dig one of these compression calculators up? Any suggestions on a reliable/accurate one? My current thought is going...

2.5 Frankenstein possible with 9.5-9.7/1 compression?
So I've been searching throughout various forums, but I can't find anyone who's tried to build a naturally aspirated Frankenstein that came in somewhere close to OEM compression ratio. I'm not really interested in being married to high-dollar fuel. Is there an OEM piston combination out there that w...

Re: It was finally time to do head gaskets
500,000 miles could take a while as this is now my winter-only car (Miata gets summer use). It's fun to see the look on peoples' faces when I tell them the car has that many miles on it. It looks like a 200,000 mile car.

Re: It was finally time to do head gaskets
No...bought the car from the original owner with 340,000 on it. He still garaged it every night. The guy was a maintenance junkie, so $800 was too good a deal to pass up. I suspect this engine can go considerably further than another 100,000 with the continued maintenance I've done to it.

It was finally time to do head gaskets
My '93 B10 Wagon only made it 354,000 miles before I got my first indication of a head gasket leak: A slight loss of coolant every 1,000 miles or so with no external leaks. It was on the original oil separator plate and needed the cheap Valeo clutch replaced with something a little more reliable, so...

When purchasing an aftermarket head unit, be aware of the radio issue discussed in multiple areas, but lastly here:

Re: KYB strut name change, GR-2 to Excel-G
Another thought just popped into my head. Have you tried to source the Legacy Spec B suspension parts? Are they any different from what you'd find on a regular turbo Legacy?

Re: KYB strut name change, GR-2 to Excel-G
Of course when I asked KYB about the damping, they replied it's 10-15% stiffer than stock. Do you still have your inside source / KYB engineer to talk to? If not, I would not assume that the people on the other end of the phone have any idea about the damping capabilities of either your OEM shocks ...

Back on topic, if we could. I'm not interested in turning this into a "why phase 1 head gaskets fail" thread...there are plenty of those.

Re: Swap? Turbo? Leave it alone?
Not from my experience. I've seen more than a few "redesigned" head gaskets come in for another round of head gaskets.

Re: Swap? Turbo? Leave it alone?
Unfortunately, the Phase 1 EJ25 doesn't meet my reliability requirement. I'm not really interested in making head gaskets part of my 30,000-mile maintenance schedule. Besides, Phase 1 timing belt jobs are not at the top of the easy scale and I'm not all that interested in spending a few hundred doll...

Swap? Turbo? Leave it alone?
After 354,000 miles my EJ22 has finally decided to begin losing coolant through the head gaskets. Since it is time for the engine to come out, I have come to the conclusion the I would like a little bit more power than the stock EJ22 provides. I have several options to choose from, but my searching ...

Re: M/T fluid question
I may try a half-and-half blend of 75W90 and 75W140 to start with. I'm not certain I need to suck even more power out of my lackluster 2.2 with the full use of heavier fluid. I should really just buy that EJ22t powerplant I found....

Re: KYB strut name change, GR-2 to Excel-G
There have been discussions on multiple forums regarding this change. I have installed both GR-2 and Excel-G dampers into different vehicles, and in some cases there is a clear and distinct difference between the valving of the two. The Excel-G has much softer valving in some vehicle applications th...

Re: Battery keeps draining - short somewhere? HELP
Are you familiar with a parasitic draw test? If so, do one now. If not, find someone who is and have them do one. All it takes is a 0-10A ammeter.

Re: Time to hunt the gremlin
Another idea I thought of was simply installing a relay that would open the ground circuit for the capacitor when the ign was turned to off. This would leave the capacitor charged, which I'm not too enthusiastic about, but it is a solution.

Re: Time to hunt the gremlin
Okay, as far as I have discovered this is a normal condition to this particular car and possibly other Subaru vehicles. The reason behind my theory is this: No other vehicle line that I know of has the wipers powered from the accessory circuit. The capacitor in the wiper switch has no proper ground ...

Re: Time to hunt the gremlin
No, you're right. A diode won't suffice for what is going on. Still, something is not right. According to what you're saying, the probability is that every car (not just every Subaru, every CAR) should exhibit this problem. Yet, I have owned well over 20 different automobiles in my life, most with s...

Re: Time to hunt the gremlin
Yes, but every properly designed circuit also has diodes to keep the capacitors from discharging into the rest of the system. My suspicion is that a diode in the switch may have failed short after a long enough period of sustained circuit heat (350,000+ miles of driving in Oregon). Whether this is c...

Re: Time to hunt the gremlin
Oh, and here's the best part.
1) Turn Ign on with radio on.
2) Unplug wiper motor connector from underhood.
3) Turn Ign off - radio shuts off immediately.
4) Plug wiper motor connector in with key off - RADIO TURNS BACK ON.
It's either in the motor or the switch assembly.

Re: Time to hunt the gremlin
The circuit contains the wiper/washer system, cigarette lighter, radio, and input side for the main radiator fan relay. I'm finding it difficult to believe that the system normally has a stored load with the vehicle completely turned off. The bleed-down on this is actually quite long with no loads o...

Re: Time to hunt the gremlin
The issue in the circuit has to do with the wiper system in particular. Once the wiper motor is unplugged the system acts as normal. However, with it plugged in there is a slow 12V bleed off that occurs. I'm not certain as of yet whether or not this is coming from within the wiper motor assembly or ...

Okay, after reading through the search topics on this I've decided to make it my personal crusade to hunt and defeat the radio circuit gremlin that has plagued our beloved automobiles for too long. ....okay, maybe that was a bit dramatic. In any case, the issue at hand involves the radio circuit wit...
