Mine will do that too from time to time. But it's quite rare. Maybe it's condensation causing some electrical noise. I have a question for you (or for anybody else who cares to reply) related to your A/F gauge. When you accelerate hard enough to reach positive manifold pressure (boost), does your ga...

Not to defend the guy because I've never bought from him, nor do I know anybody that has, but he's had close to 10,000 transactions in the last year, and only about 1% got negative feedback. Mind you, he does seem to be a bit of a prick when replying to negative feedback. What worries you about abou...

Don't use PVC tubing (the black plastic tubing used for plumbing) for the can. I did, and it wasn't able to withstand the heat/chemicals. I ended up with an interesting piece of modern art!

Well, it's my understanding that a vacuum in the crank case helps the rings seal better, and even with a filter on those breather tanks, they can still be messy. Some oily vapour will get vented into the engine bay and the fumes can get sucked into the car interior. I have friends whose Datsuns don'...

I have an oil-air separator in my Legacy. I used a piece of 3" diameter PCV tubing caped at both ends and filled with stainless steel scouring pads. There's an input fitting on the side near the bottom and an output fitting on the top. I put a drain plug from an air compressor on the bottom. Th...

It's quite possible I'm wrong. I'm really tempted to pull the stock dp just to find out. But if I'm right, I'd rather just do this once, so I think I'll wait 'till I get the bung welded on before I try. I measured the distance from the the rear flange of the dp to the lower mounting bracket that bol...

I'm confused... or maybe just lucky... I just picked up a bellmouthed DP, and I'm just eyeballing it, but it looks like it's the right length to bolt right up to the cat on the stock mid-pipe. This isn't supposed to be the case, right? It looks like it's maybe a 1/2" longer, but there should be...

Short shifter and bushing mods done!

This past weekend I modified my shift lever as per Mike Yach's instructions in the Legacy Central Library http://www.legacycentral.org/library/diy_ss.htm . It was fairly straightforward. I also rebent the shift lever to move the knob back more (I'm tall and have the seat way back so I have a long re...

I think you may be thinking of the later model subaru's where there is a splined shaft at the end of the inner CV joint that slips into the trany? On mine, there is a short, splined shaft that sticks out from the trany. The inner CV joint slips over that, and a roll pin is hammered through the joint...

trany stub shafts badly worn!

I was checking things out under my '94 Turbo, and I discovered that there is a serious amount of play where the inner CV joint mounts to the transmission. There's no rotational play (yet!), but I can rock the CV joint up and down, side to side and in and out on the transmission stub shafts. The hole...

Neither I6 or B4's have nor require balance shafts. They both have harmonic "dampers" though. (Perhaps someone with a B4 crank pulley handy can 100% confirm that for me). The harmonic damper is made up of a heavy ring mounted over a thin layer of rubber attached to a center hub that attach...

I would have to disagree that an in-line six is an inherently imbalanced engine type. In fact, the complete opposite is true. An in-line six produces nearly zero vibration. Strength and durability are also non-issues as there are plenty of I6's producing a reliable 500+ lb/ft of torque on a stock bo...

The Legacy's do have a harmonic ballancer. Before you consider replacing it with a solid pulley, or replacing any of the other pulleys with underdrive units, you should read this article by Steve Dinan of Dinan BMW: http://www.toyotacelicaonline.com/pulleys.htm Nigel '94 Legacy Turbo '73 240Z Turbo

Is it only overheating at idle, or does it overheat even when driven at a steady speed on the highway? Are the radiator fans working? Does the car have A/C? The condensor could be so beaten up that there is poor air flow to the rad.

Thanks guys! I'm happy to help when I can... You should really have no problems finding the bearings and seals. Be carefull when you remove the pinch-bolt that holds the ball joint in the knuckle. When I did mine, the bolt snapped and it was a major PITA to drill out the bolt. I've heard similar stories from others. I took a torch to the other side to make sure it came out ok. If that's not an option, then re...
