Why's smoke coming from this part of the exhaust flange? Pic
OK, so I've had some smoke coming out from underneath the driver side exhaust. It's especially noticeable when the car is idling. I did some research, and came to the conclusion that either the valve cover gasket was leaking or one of those valve cover gasket bolt grommets were leaking and dripping ...

Re: What on Earth is going on with my transmission?!?!
No the light just stays on, no flashing. If there's no flashing is it safe to assume that there may not be a code stored? The car has roughly 160k on it so nothing absolutely absurd. I'm wondering if make the transmission cooler went out? Go to the link I provided and check for codes anyway to make...

What on Earth is going on with my transmission?!?!
It has a weird problem, (I think its a sensor issue maybe?) on a cold start the car will be totally fine and drive like a champ, but after the car has been driven a while and heated up, if you shut it off then start it up again while the oil is still hot the AT Oil Temp light will come on and the ca...

Re: My ac turned itself into a heater
the slider for hot/cold just moves a cable that pulls on a select door in the heater box. It's completely manual. I am gonna guess your selector cable either broke or came disconnected. It's pretty easy to see where it goes if you pull the HVAC panel and the glove box. You were right! Thanks a ton!...

I believe analog. It's just a lever that you slide left to right to control temp. and buttons to press for ac, heat, defrost, etc.

Re: My ac turned itself into a heater
Ya it changes from the vents to the defroster. I'm wondering if I'm actually having trouble with the temperature selector. Like maybe for some reason inside the control unit it's stuck on the hot option and won't shift to the cold.

My fiancé borrowed my car and turned the heater on this morning. Now when the ac is on the heater still blows instead. The compressor still turns on and all the ac lines are
Ice cold but for some reason the vents belch out the furnace of hell from my vents. Wtf is going on?

Re: Another stupid (hopefully) transmission problem I'm havi
Figured it out. I guess VSS#1 on a FWD is the VSS #2 on an AWD. The speedo cable was tweaked. I went to a junkyard and pulled one and put it in and the VSS code went away and the transmission shifts fine now. What a pain in the ass.

Re: Another stupid (hopefully) transmission problem I'm havi
Ya this is where I'm extremely confused/frustrated with this car. It's fwd. it throws code vss 1. My Haynes only says its located on the trans axle near the axle spline. I checked and see nothing by the spline. The closest thing to it is the speedo cable plug-in into the trans (which from what I'm u...

Re: Another stupid (hopefully) transmission problem I'm havi
Okay, well I'm gonna pull a few from my local junkyard and hope one of them will work. Does FWD vs AWD matter? Or are they interchangeable? I know their location is different so I just want to make sure. Thanks!!!

Re: Another stupid (hopefully) transmission problem I'm havi
AWESOME! Good to know. I'll check that out asap. Also, does anyone have the Part # for the VSS #1? I've downloaded the parts catalog and have sifted through that and could not find it. I also checked out subaruparts.com and it gives me like 6 difference "speed sensors".

Re: Another stupid (hopefully) transmission problem I'm havi
OK, so I pulled the code and I got code 32 or Vehicle Speed Sensor 1. The only thing I could find next to the dipstick was this in the photo. But that's not a sensor. That is just where the speedo cable plugs into the transmission. So is the VSS #1 in the actual cluster itself? If so, what does it l...

Re: Another stupid (hopefully) transmission problem I'm havi
Hmmm. My legacy has a speedometer cable with a plug in that is similar to that but I can't locate the vss on my 1990. Is it near the rear perhaps?

Another stupid (hopefully) transmission problem I'm having
So basically what's happening is the car will be cruising just fine and will even shift into 4th once my speed is fast enough and cruise below 2500rpm's. However, after a few seconds, the car downshifts itself back into 3rd and the RPM's shoot up to 3000. To maintain freeway speeds (65mph) the RPM'S...

Re: sunroof/moonroof not opening, no sounds, not repsonding.
Thought I'd up this as I'm still struggling with this issue. I got the switch to work and the relay near the sunroof motor makes a "clicking noise" so I know that power is getting to the motor. Is it now fair to assume that the motor is bad and needs to be replaced?

Mother of god...they are separate. Hopefully it hasn't been completely wrecked by my idiocy. Will normal tranny fluid work?

Is the differential fluid separate from the tranny fluid?
In my 90 legacy fwd the tranny is making a gear wind noise. I noticed there is a differential dip stick and I never put fluid in it. I just filled the entire transmission up with oil assuming it was included. So my question is: does the differential need to be filled up as well via the dip stick tube?

Ah yes, you're right once again. The cable base that I ordered did not come with the metal clip, I just took it off the old one and there it went. Awesome. You have to be the most knowledgeable person I've ever encountered on the interwebs.

awesome, I got the ticking to go away. My only other problem is how to full seat the cable into the cable base. How does it stay in? Do I pinch the little prongs on the base together to pin the cable inside or does it just sit in there and I pull the rubber cable cover over it?

Re: Tranny wont shift out of 1st, also all gauges non-op.
Just thought I'd update. The cable base was in fact bad. Once I replaced it the transmission began shifting. I've still got more work to do as now the speedometer "clicks" and of course it "clicks" the faster it goes. Could lubrication or perhaps the angle of the cable be the rea...
