Shaking steering

Post by IronMonkeyL255 »

I've had a problem for a while now, but recently it's gotten worse.

When turning left at low speeds (parking lot speeds), my steering is REALLY rapidly shaky while turning. It seems to have power assist the entire time, but it just feels SOOO not right.

At higher speeds, there is nothing.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Is it the p/s pump? The rack itself?

Well, it could be one of two things. If it's car shuddering, I think it's probably torque lock. Only way to fix that: Expensive.

Other thing: Low RPM. My car, when at low RPM, will shudder in the steering when going around corners. Solution: Take corners faster .

But seriously, I think it's a matter of the engine not turning fast enough to run power assist.

Also, it doesn't do it when turning right at the same speeds.

Worn seals perhaps?

Any ideas...?

My granpa's wagon is doing this as well, although it only does it when you're going straight, and especially at high speeds.

Check your tie-rod ends, be sure they're in good condition. I need to as well.

Do you have an auto or 5spd?

Could be torque bind, could be cv joints....

put in a fuse in the FWD fuse holder, and see if your problem goes away.

Anything I should check for the tie-rod ends?

What fuse should I use?

Check to be sure the boots are intact, and check that they only rotate in place and don't wiggle around.

My 90 BJ has the same problem. Does it left or right at low speeds. Fluid is full.

I guess you could call it a stumble.

I'm inclined to say it is the pump.

If I sit in my driveway and turn the wheel it will hold for a second...then go limp...then hold...then limp. Like it is playing catch up.

I think I might rebuild the pump with the help of Josh's thread and do a DYI thread with pics just for the sake of this thread and wanting to know.

Bent wheels, bad tires, bad axle.

Which is the most likely to be bad?

If your not sure, swap your rear tires to the front, if it still does it, suspect the axle.

I narrowed mine down to the P/S pump. I noticed last night when I was doing some work on it that the pump is making a loud whinning noise.

Anything making this kind of noise can not be working at 100% (IMO
