Bad Gas Mileage?

Post by Thor »

Not sure where to post this, It seems that my car is down to a 1/4 tank, with only 150 miles on the trip. I drive quick, but it shouldnt be this bad. It is also a stock ej22t. Anyone have a good guess what it should be getting after 100k or where I should start looking? Thanks in advance.

Oh yea, I think my brakes are locking up and I can hear my back diff, the noise accelerates with the speed. Getting pads and changing the diff fluid within the next two weeks. Any thoughts besides that :P

I've been getting 200 miles a tank.

I havent managed to solve the problem, but replacing the stock muffler with a straight through glasspack improved things a little.

I'm gonna be trying new plugs and hopefully cleaning out the IAC valve soon

Hmm I'm trying for turbo back but I will get eaten alive after shocks, brakes, and who knows what with the back diff.

Right now I am thinking injectors, or mebe O2 sensors. I don't have a air fuel gauge or anything nifty yet. I didn't think about the exaust, but before my truck's cat went the mileage was getting really bad.

You have a 15 gallon tank. Being at a quarter tank with 150 miles might mean that your fuel gauge is malfunctioning, a common issue. try filling your tank to where you can see the gas in the fill tube and check what kind of volume you put in there. That will give you a better idea of what you're getting.

16.610 Mpg. With probly the first quarter tank being highway, the last city. Should be around 249 for a tank so I am guessing my gas gauge is screwed. That and it takes like 15 sec to get up to full. I am guessing its going to be the float or something because the gas gauge doesnt shake or jump. I did notice it read a 1/8 difference up then down then up. Half of the problem solved.

My gas gauge is a little screwy too

From the immediate look of things, one really hard pull can take 1/8th a tank of gas!

I think the tank is just set up in such a way that hard accleration or hill driving can really screw up the gauge

Yeah, hard pulls kill your gas, that's for sure. I believe there's a pair of send recieve units that have been usual suspects in this case. My gas gauge dips way down below empty at times. I'll have 260 mi a lot of times when I go to fill up and only wind up putting 10 or 11 gallons in.

I can't win. My first car was a cj5 with a completely shot gas gauge. My other car is a 98 sierra with a vibrating gas gauge that spins in a circle or two sometimes when I start it up, and with the legacy, .. I should have known. :-D

Yea my gauge is off from time to time also. Some times, it functions just fine. I haven't found anything to link why it acts up sometimes.

I think the gas gauge malfunctions and the speedo needle wobble makes our cars cute. lol.

My gas gauge has always worked perfect. Except that the gas light comes on at like an 1/8th of a tank for a few minutes and then comes back on when it's actually supposed to.

I don't think my wagon has a light, at least nothing lights up when turning the key to the on position, and I don't think I ever saw a spot for it...

Yes. '91's have lights. Drive it down to around 13 gallons (That's about 260-280 miles for me) and you'll see the little light come on. I do believe it works regardless of how the gas gauge works (because my gauge doesn't work either).

My light used to work but I'm pretty sure it doesn't any more.

Thor, are you resetting the trip meter at a fillup then doing the math at the next fill up, preferably at the same station to calculate mileage? It seems like a lot of people don't do it right.

Yup. I have one other car with a broken gauge so its a habit, normally I judge my mileage and average rpm, but this is the first automatic/turbo I have driven habitually and its making it alittle harder.

try putting a scrap of 2x4 under the gas pedal so you can only get 1/2 throttle
