EJ20G into '91 Turbo Legacy SS - Complete Swap Writup (PICS)

Post by BoostAddict »

...UPDATED July. 27/2007

My orignal EJ22T, which had ~380,000km's blew a head gasket. Instead of rebuilding it, or looking for another EJ22T locally (since they all seem to have a lot of miles on them), I found a JDM Legacy EJ20G with < 50,000km's locally. I have also been able to find a Ver.1/2 JDM WRX Sti TypeRA ECU (pics below), which I'm planning to use in this setup.

I will be swapping the following into my 1991 Legacy SS:

PARTS LIST
------------------
1994 JDM DOHC EJ20G
1994 JDM WRX STi Ver. 1 TypeRA ECU (pics below)
SVX Ignitor
2003 USDM WRX T04L turbo
------------------

The car:
Image

The 1994 WRX STi TypeRA ECU:
Image

Image
Here are the numbers on the ECU:
22611 AA810
A18-000 RY7
4525
(Made by JECS)

I have been reading through a lot of posts on LegacyCentral and NASIOC about similar swaps done by snowjob, Matt Monson and Do It Sidewayz. From what I have been able to conclude by looking at the 1991-1994 USDM Legacy (EJ22T), 1992 JDM Legacy (EJ20G) and 1994 WRX FSM's, the only difference in the wiring is the 2-channel ignition system vs. the 4-channel Coil-On-Plug ignition system in these cars.

I am planning to use the STOCK USDM EJ22T wiring harness and hook it up to the JDM EJ22T engine and to the 1994 WRX STi ECU. By looking at the diagrams of the USDM EJ22T ECU pinouts (http://www.graphics.cornell.edu/~v/ecupins/) and comparing them to the 1994 WRX ECU pinouts (http://www.graphics.cornell.edu/~v/pics/94_wrx_ecu.pdf), there seem to be only 2 wires that are different (the B44.7 and B44.8 Ignition Channel #3 and #4 on the 1994 WRX FSM). Someone please confinrm whether this is the only wiring modification that will have to be done.

I am also planning to use the USDM SVX ignitor and splice it to use it with the 1994 WRX ECU and the JDM EJ20G Coil-On-Plug.

Here are my Questions:
--------------------------------
- Could someone provide me with a diagram or pointers on how I should connect the SVX ignitor to work with the 4-channel Coil-On-Plug system in the JDM EJ20G?

- Will the USDM EJ22T Legacy wiring diagram plug into all of the connectors on the JDM EJ22T?

- Could someone that this 1994 WRX ECU is indeed a "1994 WRX STi TypeRA" ECU?

- Can I use my stock USDM EJ22T MAF sensor with the 1994 WRX ECU and EJ20G, or do I have to get the JECS MAF sensor
(mentioned in this post: http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic. ... 1259#51259)
Quote: " As far as I can tell, everything else is actually the same aside from the different MAF sensor (the EJ20 ECU is a JECS unit and so uses the JECS sensor). "

- Can I use the 1 stock USDM EJ22T O2 sensor, or did the 1994 JDM WRX use 2 O2 sensors?

- Will my stock USDM EJ22T MAF sensor, Wastegate Control Solenoid Valve and Pressure Exchange Solenoid Valve work with this setup, or will I have to replace them with the JDM components in order to accurately read 15psi of boost and correctly relay it to the 1994 WRX ECU?

- Are there any other wiring modifications that I will have to make to the stock USDM EJ22T wiring in order to run this setup?
--------------------------------

I will post pictures of all the modifications needed to drop in the JDM EJ20G into an USDM 1991 Legacy SS as well as diagrams documenting all wiring mods needed. At the end I want to post a video of what the final outcome will look /sound/drive like.

Thanks in advance for all your help ;)

Can't you conver the EJ20 over to waste spark like your EJ22 had?

I bought an EJ20 (was EJ20tt at one time) that had the coil-on-plug system but I just did away with it and had to find a place to mount the coil pack. The guy I sold it to installed it in his 90's legacy and he said it worked great.

I'm sure someone else will chime in to confirm or deny my thoughts.

Thanks for your reply subawhatsubawho.

I'd prefer to stay with the EJ20G and WRX ECU "coil-on-plug" system. It would be great if someone could post a diagram outlining how to make the SVX ignitor work with that setup.

My swap(90 EJ20g RS-RA) came with all the sensors, I believe the the pressure sensor, exchange solenoid and wastegate solenoid are the same as the EJ22t. That is if the stuff I got from Matt was off an EJ22t.

As far as I know you will need a Jecs MAF.

The 94 WRX uses One, 3-Wire O2 sensor. Right now I am using a 4-wire with the fourth wire grounded to the Engine, it works fine.

I would consider converting to wasted Spark. For the sole reason of easily available replacement parts. those coil packs are not that easy to find and are considered problem-matic. The ignitors are also not easy to find and. My swap came with the 4-Channel Ignitor so I am currently using the coil-on-Plug setup. I have already gone through one set of coils. my 2cents.

you could just use two EJ22e ignitors ... do the WRX coils have ignitors or do they have them intergrated into the coil? if they are intergrated, then just get a set of WRX coils (if they will fit on the head) and forget the ignitor entirely.

The usdm wrx coils do have ignitor built in. they do not bolt on the Legacy "g" heads. If there was a way to modify them to work, I would consider this option. as replacements are more available.

DAMN! I just got so excited, 'cause I found an '04 USDM WRX wiring diagram and just verified that the USDM WRX coils have the ignitor built in :(

How would I go about wiring my current stock 2-channel EJ22T Diamond coil-pack with the 1994 WRX Sti ECU (which expects a 4-channel ignition)?

If someone could post a wiring diagram of what this would look like, it would be wicked ;)

One more question:
- Would the 2002-2004 USDM WRX MAF be the same as a JDM JECS MAF? Were there any other MAF's installed on USDM Subbies, which were the same as the 1994-1996 WRX JECS ...Or do I specifically need to find a JDM 1994-1996 WRX JECS MAF sensor?

I have both the JECS MAF and the SVX ignitor from my old swap. PM me an offer and we can make a deal. I could include some instructions for wiring in the ignitor with it.

As for replacing the coils, they are readily available stateside. They are the same as SVX coils.

But you are on the right path. This can be done so much more simply than I did it. If you use your EJ22T harnesses, you will need to wire in the whole of the ignition from the coils to the ignitor to the ECU. You can use the two wires that run from your current ignitor to the ECU, but everything else will need to be added...

I used a 97 2.5 JECS Maf on my "g" for a while, it worked fine.

The JECS MAF and the SVX ignitor should be at my house on Thursday :)

So I guess I'm going with the original Coil On Plug setup, and using the SVX ignitor after all.

Can anyone approximate the HP figures using the above setup, USDM WRX T04L turbo at 16psi, Invidia DP, 3" SS exhaust with a high-flo cat and the JDM 1994 STi TypeRA ECU with 95 octane maps?

Thanks,

Hi Peter, could you please have some write up for hows your setup?
I know I was stuck on this ECU, coil things for long time since my first EJ20G swap. and now you just gives me some light to find the way to go for the full swap.
Good luck on your engine and will see what will be your result!

Wow i did some research when I was doing my swap and I was going to get an ecu from autronic for the 94 wrx. never tought of using a stock r4 wrx ecu with like a pp.

That leads me to a new question. was there any wrx that used and ecu wit h3 connectors with two rows of pins like my 95 impreza?

well...it was actually gary's car (inzomniac).

But it's not residing in my Driveway, waiting to be swapped into my 85 RX!!

anyways...this car is running off the Stock Legacy Turbo Computer, and stock wiring harness.

I have all the wiring diagrams and pin outs printed beside me...I then made an excel spreadsheet, where i compared them both. I believe you are correct, there was something like 2 wires that were different (needed to be added).

Now..where the heck did you get that dam STi ECU?? I want that for my rally car!!!!

When i do the conversion into my rally car, i'm going to use the JDM ECU, and use the coilpacks that came with the engine when Gary got it!

Good Luck!

CURRENT STATUS:
***************

After re-wiring and mating the EJ22T wiring harness with the EJ20G one, routing all the wiring to the Ver.1/2 Impreza WRX Sti TypeRA ECU and wiring in the Subaru SVX ignitor with the EJ20G Coil-plugs and the JECS MAF the car started up on first try!!!

We are having two minor problems though:
1. There seems to be some misfiring when we rev the engine past idle (we're planning to check every coil for spark)
2. We're getting a MAF Sensor ECU Error Code...

I'm attaching the picture of the JECS MAF Connector and the Ver.1/2 Impreza WRX Sti TypeRA ECU pinouts. It would be great if someone who has swapped in the EJ20G and the Impreza Ver.1/2 ECU into their Legacy could reply to this post and let me know how the JECS MAF sensor should be wired (the old 1991 Legacy Turbo MAF had 5 wires going to it and the JECS MAF has only 4).
