Garrett turbos...

Post by subiecar »

:D Hi-I have a T-28 turbo (60 AR and ball-bearing) that would work to about 20 psi on a 2.2; if no IC, I would`nt run it above 10-12 psi with stock timing. I love it for quick spool-up and upper rpm boost potential. I won`t know the total rundown on it until I get my Unichip and have some dyno work done. BTW, I have a 4EAT with 3:90 gears and a JMO convertor. The TD04 is supposed to be a good turbo also but I have`nt any personal experience with it. Usually you`ll need a different flange set-up if you go to a Garrett turbo. Check with a local supplier for the adaptation info. Good luck---Rod

yor waisting your time with that T28. The T28/GT28 series turbos were designed for quick spool and outragous rpm levels of the Honda 1.6L and 1.8L engines. Using such a whimpy turbo on a 2.2L is just not the right idea. The TD05 doesnt spool near as quickly as stock but it does pull very hard on top... i know becuz i swapped one into "Frmrgs2rchs" car. If you wanted to stay Garret then the better choice would be the GT30/T32. These are made for engines between 2.0-2.5L and will allow a 7500rpm redline to stay on the compressor map. Theywill not spool quite as fast but are good for much more horsepower on the top of your power band.

GT28 turbo series...

Post by subiecar »

 I was curious about the comment that the GT28 was too small for my 2.4 motor so I called an expert/Garrett distributor. Here`s the correct info: there are 3 different T28s and make the following HP dependent on modifications-T28R (mine) 280-300 hp--T28RS-300-330 hp and T2871R-400+ hp (next turbo after Unichip.) The 71R has a slightly different flange for the DP, so it`ll have to be changed. It seems the AR (simply how quickly the turbo spools) is`nt much different among the 3 so any of the 3 should work well with my auto and 3:90 gearing. BTW, they`re all double roller bearing turbos. Just some info for the "turbo-thirsty"--Rod :D

hold up now i never said they wouldnt work, i just said that they werent really designed for a larger displacement engine. You can swap out comperssor wheels to fit it to your engine but its costly, timely, and takes some skill and i never automaticaly assume that people know how to rebuild turbos.

Theyll make the horsepower, but for anything above a 2.0L i would expect nothing less than the potentail for 450hp from a turbo. I have a 2.4 DOHC in my Z24 and a T28 is just too small, it would spool too quickly. A more proper fit would be a T3/T04S... spools at 3000revs and still has the potential for more than 500hp. Its not BAD to use a small turbo however youll have a lot more trouble breaking 300bhp barrier. IF your not interested in doing so then i suppose a T28 would fit your taste. Though i still recommend the TD05 (small 16G)
