idle problems and stalling

Post by Weazel240 »

Im curious to what can be the cause of high Idling?
happens on first start ups on cold engines.
rpm needle stays at 3K for a few mins.

im curious if an exhaust leak could cause that?
and also the car stalls out every now and then.
its a MAF base car so im thinkin the exhaust leak located by the up-pipe is causin this???
any input is appreciated.

It's supposed to go up to 1.5k RPM or so to warm itself up, and will work its way down to around 750-800 RPM or so.

How low does your idle settle at once the engine's warmed up?

Yes im aware that it is suppose to be higher until it warms up, but i think 3k is kinda high.
it does idle around the norm rpm when warm, except that the needle jumps up and down a lil. (i think its jumpin a lil because of the exhaust leak by the up pipe.)

mine jumps to 2K upon startup.
if I leave it, don't let the clutch out or nothing, it'll slowly work it's way back down to normal idle once warmup has completed.

I can give the throttle a little blip and it'll settle down to idle speed.

I have the same issue, but if I get on the throttle a little and bring it up to around 3k it will idle higher for a bit. It feels as if the throttle sticks a little on cold starts

I also get a jumpy needle sometimes when I start the car and the engine is warm. It will bounce around in idle territory between 1k and stall, although coming close it hasn't stalled when doing this.

I don't think I have an exhaust leak, and I'm fairly sure my O2 sensor is working properly. I've tried a few things, but none of them made it go away. I've cleaned the MAF (Mass Air Flow sensor) with Seafoam Deep Creep (a carb cleaner), and also the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve and intake manifold with Deep Creep as well and nothing has really changed.

Anyone have an idea what could cause this?

I noticed my tach was 'jumpy' shortly before the car ceased to run. The cause? timing belt jumped thus throwing off the timing.

I'm going to replace my plugs and wires soon, we'll see if that makes a difference.

Try a new O2 sensor.
Aswell as a new negative and positive battery cable....
