Upgrade Parts Have Arrived… Let the install begin (pics)
Well the last of my parts showed up today so its time to get busy. Here’s the list…
Metal Master Brake Pads
WRX Wheels
AGX Struts
Eibach Pro Kit Springs (with WRX Tops)
VDO Boost, Oil Press and Volt Gauges
WRX Top Mount IC
VF24 Turbo
EJ20G DOHC Heads, Manifold and Injectors
Helix 3” SS Turbo Back Exhaust (installed a few weeks ago)
Its WAY better than Christmas, Ha Ha Ha
I’m working on my gauge mounts now and they should be in this weekend, hoping to do struts/spring and brakes (and front wheel bearings) next weekend and then I’ll pull the engine and do the heads, manifold, turbo and IC (maybe rings too). I hope to do the engine work over a couple of weeks and I’ll have my RX to drive while the T-leg is down.
Just thought I’d share (and gloat a little)… don’t hate me.
Gary

No matter how broke I am... I always seem to find two cents.

I did a lot of shopping around and I think I got a pretty good deal on most of the stuff…
Metal Master Brake Pads - $77
WRX Wheels - $300 with decent tires
AGX Struts - $ 400 New
Eibach Pro Kit Springs (with WRX Tops) - $180 springs, $50 tops
VDO Boost, Oil Press and Volt Gauges - $130 New
WRX Top Mount IC - $70
VF24 Turbo - $350
EJ20G DOHC Heads, Manifold and Injectors - $400
Helix 3” SS Turbo Back Exhaust (installed a few weeks ago) - $450
So that’s $2280, plus I figure a few hundred more to get it all installed. I’m planning to repaint this summer, but since I do my own paint work that will only be about $400. I bought the car with a bad clutch for $1400 and installed a nearly new WRX clutch/flywheel for $225 So I’ll be in the car a total of around $4600… not to bad I think.
And just so you don’t do think I’m made of money I’ll give ya a little back story. Normally it would take me years to scratch together something like this but I recently switched jobs and after 11 years of taking very little vacation I had quite a bit of time accumulated, the pay out was about $4400. So I figured this was my chance and that I had earned it, Ha Ha Ha.
Yes, I use the lathe/mill quite a bit, just last night I used it to make part of my gauge mounts. It’s a top of the line Smithy 13 x 40.
Gary
And Steve, my IC could kick your ICs a$$ any day

Don't discourage Nico, he posts some funny and informative shiott...
I wish I had a FMIC that took up my entire front fascia
Then again, that garage full of new Subaru parts and the lathe would be nice too. Damn that's going to be a nice setup.
I'd have gone a different route with the IC of course, I don't think very much of top-mounts. Sure it will work, but a front-mount of the same size would be far more efficient and, more importantly, much further away from the engine heat. And if I was going through all that trouble to install those parts, I'd definately run FMIC piping while I'm at it.
I still look forward to some dyno and/or track results from this setup though.

free5ty1e i couldnt have siad it better, all that work diserves a front mount.
i wish my cam cover would come in so i could put my dohc heads on, i hate this wiatting CRAP.
o ya dont worry im getting it all tuned on a awd dyno so i can say i got a million HP hahahhaha SO EXCITED right now.
ALL_TALK messure your inlet valve and exit valve, i dont no the name of the tool, you have a lathe so you no what tool i am taking about. i want to compare your valve size with my ej20k valve size.
also i am useing the 2.5L rs doch north american intake manifold gaskets, see if the gaskets match the ports with no extra meat on the heads and the manifold. mine match the gaskets as if they where ported from the factory.

Thanks for the good words guys... and I take all the hate and jealousy as pure love.
UPDATE: Gauges done, thread here... http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=25344
NICO, I'll try and remember to measure the valves tomorrow.
On the FMIC, I dont see a good way to do it with pulling the A/C and its gets over 100F here in the summer... I'm keeping the A/C. If I dont get the cooling I'm looking for I've got a few thoughts on getting more air through teh top mount and I might step up to a STi unit.

Awesome - I love the gauge placement.
The FMIC install in no way interfered with my precious A/C - you think I'd settle for a modification here in FL that required the loss of air conditioning?!? Surely you jest.
FMIC + AC = AOK
By the way, even with one of those hood scoop diverters that helps distribute the air over a TMIC... you're still looking at an inter-heater after about 5 minutes of driving.
Once you get everything installed, borrow a laser temperature gauge, idle your car, and point the laser at the various rows on the IC. Compare to ambient. After that, if you still decide to keep with a top-mount, well, frankly I'd be surprised.
