I will be installing a skid plate.....

Not for the oil pan....

But damn that IC hits shit!

I slammed it into my driveway tonight! Biff! Wasnt horrible, but I now have incentive to make one.

I am going to order a sheet of 3/16" aluminium, cut to size, have it bent at a sheet metal shop at the right spots, and then install some various other parts on it to protect the side hoses and what not. Or so goes the plan.

You think 3/16ths will cut it?

I was thinking about going with 1/16ths aluminum as a core for a carbon fibre exoskeleton of about 1/8ths

a 1/4" sandwich like that will stop an anti-aircraft shell, so I'm hoping that an 8th will stop a rock ;)

I ended up going with a sheet of 1/16th, which is terribly thin, but I basically just need it to protect against mud and sod at the rallycross tomorrow.

I mounted it with three bolts to the intercooler, and then to the two front bolts that are right behind the oil pan that hold the front of the tranny mount?

I bent the lip up in front of the IC, hopefully this will work ok....

I will post a pic soon.

So....

The skidplate works pretty good sto far. Even though it is weak ass, and sucks in design, the fact that I have stengthened the FMIC, when ever I slam into something, the plate, or the bolts, absorb the hit. Not the best setup, but it works very well.

Holy fuck did I bork my intercooler!!!!!

It still works, no leaks (I think) but damn!

I am not sure when I did the damage, but I have hit a few things with it........

Anyway, I am looking under the wagon just now and think to myself "Thats odd... I don't remember it angling back so far..."

It is smacked back a good 2 inches AND the skid plate buckled! The aluminium thankfully didnt tear, just bent, at all six mounting nuts (three on top where it is bolted to the bumber, and three on the bottom, where the skid plate is attached)

The crazy thing is, is that the skid plate bent in two places, EXACTLY WHERE I WANTED IT TO BEND!!!!! I just didnt want to take the time or money to have a metal fab shop do the work. It is bent in two perfect square 90% angles right where it mounts the the front tranny bolts, and then 3 inches away, so that it is now 2 inches away from the oil pan like I wanted!

I better pay better attention parking!
