Matching Flywheels and clutches??

Im starting a 5mt swap into my 92 touring wagon, and i want to get a lightweight flywheel...and an awesome clutch.

i read the walkthrough in the library (so awesome, with all the pics) so ive heard people putting WRX flywheels in, WRX clutches in... ect ect ect... then i heard that somethign needs to match... either be a legacy flywheel to a legacy clutch... WRX flywheel to a WRX clutch, ect...

what do i have to match? does this matter? any reccomendations? this will be my daily driver, but i LOVE to drive.. so something fun, but functional

Since WRX stuff has a larger diameter than our cars, at least the flywheel must be WRX. So WRX flywheel + stock clutch = ok. Stock flywheel + WRX clutch = bad.

If you switch both to WRX (even if its stock stuff) you open yourself up to a lot more possibilities in the future. Plus easier access to replacements if that becomes necessary. (Personally had to chang clutch 3 times so far

)

Just get all WRX stuff or all tlegacy stuff.

Ok, so this may be restating what has been said...

but if i go and order an aftermarket lightweight flywheel for a WRX, and get a exedy clutch also for the wrx... i'll be fine with everything still bolting up.. right?

my main concern is to order this stuff, then have it not fit... then i'm sitting there.. loosing a whole week due to the fact that my parts are wrong..

and a larger diameter as Brat4by4 said... that wont matter? like.. wont matter as in.. wont need modifications to anything else to make it fit? (starter motor, ect) just want to make sure i can minimize problems, but add performance to a car that no one really makes anything for...

TOTAL side note... strut tower braces... WHO MAKES THEM FOR A TURBO TOURING WAGON!?!?!? will an impreza fit, sti? legacy? honda? anything!??! i know people have them... and NO ONE says where they're from or what fits...

WRX stuff fits just fine.

All GC Impreza strut tower braces fit. 93-2001.

GC 93-01 rear bar fits.

The turbo doesn't effect the strut tower bolt pattern.

Are you swapping in a Tubro tranny or an NA tranny?

If you are swapping in a NA tranny, NOTHING WRX works. Basically....

But! I have a pretty good setup. Forester flywheel (HEAVY), Kennedy unsprung 6 puck disk and 02 RS pressure plate. Has yet to complain and I have TRIED!!!!!

So far its holding up fine for 5000 rpm drag launches giving me 1.9 60' times. Thats is some serious abuse.

i bought a legacy L wagon (91) that i'm taking the five speed out of..

so its a NA tranny....

..........and im putting that into a turbo touring wagon (92) ...

so i CAN'T use WRX stuff now?

the pressure plate configuration is differrent.
however exedy makes a lightweight flywheel and a stage 1 clutch for the NA trans. I have the clutch, its treated me well. $160 on ebay from clutchmasters

Clutchmasters isn't Exedy. If you want an awesome clutch, get a hydro-pull-type (which means you need a different tranny, one from a Turbo car.

but i just thought about it... and this means that it should be for the turbo TRANNY right???

since it says 2.2 turbo.. .. that would mean the only way would be to have ... a turbo transmission... meaning hydro clutch ...so... that does NOT work

if i search for a clutch kit for a 2.2 NA car... THAT should work ... right? (wow this is so much more confusing then i thought originally... i was STOKED about getting WRX parts.. now i am sad lol)

I, on the other hand, am pretty interested in just buying that clutch disc... A sprung 3-puck. Awesome.

200 bucks seems about right for an OE clutch kit. Make sure it's Daiken though. If it's not, send it back.

No more then 200 hp... ever. So I figured I could use the OEM exidy and be cool... but add the lightweight flywheel, and have awesome.... lightness...

Ok so what is Daikin... is it a measurement... is it a brand... is it a marking... is it a color... is it a way its machined... is it type of clutch... is it a shape...

Daikin is the brand. Exedy is made by Daikin. So if it's Exedy or Daikin, it's an OEM part. They are purple though, with silver pressure plates.

If you use the N/A tranny, get the following:

The LW flywheel you noted, the exedy clutch you noted.

If it were me, I'd have sourced a Turbo tranny, because then you could use the WRX goodies.

well this tranny might not .... last.. and if it doesnt.. i'll look for a turbo tranny.. but then wouldnt i have to switch to a hydro clutch? and get all the parts for that?

cuz thats what the WRX is right? (hydro)

or could i use a turbo tranny.. but the cable parts im getting from my 91 NA donar L Wagon.....

im slowly getting it... i just need more info...

i wish i had the service manuals... i have them for my 87 GL10 and they're awesome....

p.s...just a side note....does anyone know if you can put a regular hood scoop (WRX) in the opening for a turbo legacy hood? just curious

You can't use a turbo tranny with cables.

WRX hood scoop doesn't fit in the stock scoop spot. It's much much larger. I have one on my car, and I need to re-do it.

I really think everyone is underestimating the abuse the NA tranny can take. And spending too much money on the clutch setups as well.

Tonight I pulled 6 consecutive 1.9-1.8 60' times at the drag strip. 4000-5000 rpm launches. Nary a smell, nary a hiccup.

Total cost on my forester flywheel (new), USED 02 pressure plate, 6 puck disk, used throwout bearing was about $200.

I've never heard of a broken NA 4.111 tranny. I've heard of applications pushing 300-400HP with them, stock NA 4.111 tranny, no breakage.

It makes you wonder, no?

I've heard of lots of broken N/A 4.11 transmissions.

We had an N/A Forester blow his tranny.

The benefit of hydro pull type transmission is clutch pedal feel. Plus, when you get to crazy modding, you have a wider range of options.

im running an N/A tranny and it seems to be holding up ok so far. i just have a stage 1 on it though.

im glad someone already pointed out to you that the n/a tranny's and hydro's are different.
