Budget BBK interest?
Hey guys,
Would anyone be interested in a 13.8" 4-piston brake kit that would cost under $300 (minus rotors)?
I have a caliper I want to use, and it would require custom brackets. I have no problem designing the brackets, but for them to be reasonably priced, I'd need 4 (or more) other people to go in on them with me.
Pedal feel and brake increase would be almost identical to the STi Brembo 4-pots.
Anyone have an interest?
I might be able to do something similar for the rear too, but I haven't looked into that very much yet. I'm more worried about the fronts.
You'd probably need 17" rims.
Would you guys be interested?

How much would rotors be? Are these EVO calipers? Why so large? How much wider? Some more techincal info on the setup would be good, piston sizes, effective diameter, that sort of thing.

Hardy,
I'd like to get the parts before I start giving out information (incase things change). But rest assured, I don't expect blind commitments.
I just want to see if there might be a market for them. I wouldn't really want to make any profit, I would just want to save money by having a small batch of brackets made instead of just having 2 brackets made.
I'm 99% sure it'll all come together, but I want to have the parts and design the bracket before I set anything in stone, you know?
I did the math, and it should be pretty sick.

Yeah, I understand. I think you may have better luck on an Impreza forum though. BTW I'm not interested, just trying to get some more info. My front is done at the moment, big and heavy

I'll probably present it to the Impreza guys. It'll work for all Subaru's though, I rekon.
If I present it to the Impreza guys, I am worried about TOO much interest. I only want 4 other people to get in at the moment. If it works really well, and everyone is satisfied, then I'd look into getting more made.
I want to take care of my Legacy Brothers before I bring it to the Impreza guys.

I'll probably have all the parts then, so I might be ready to produce then.

The price varies greatly depending on where you source your parts. I estimate the brackets to be $200 or so, and the calipers to be about $100. Then you just need rotors. The Caliper price is all about what deal you can find.

Phil,
Have you looked at bias and caliper piston volume changes and all that stuff? I'd be curious to see what the numbers are.

Would this be a better balanced set up front/rear than WRX fronts/3.0 rear? I'd be interested if they'd fit under 16's, though I suppose I could buy tires in bulk for the Mazda and Subaru if I went to 17's.

Josh - If I did the fronts and rears, the bias would be perfect. If I just do the fronts, it would be a bit front biased. I need to re-run the numbers, just to make sure I did things right.
Steve - It would be a much better balanced setup than WRX fronts and 3.0 rears. It would also be vented fronts and rears.
I doubt the 13.8" setup will fit under 16" wheels, but when I do it, I'd be happy to try.

If they do fit under the RS alloys, I may be interested, but have no $$ ATM.

I am going to bet that they won't clear 16" wheels.
Those of you with 17's wouldn't be interested?
Scott - I'm looking at a few options, it depends on what's most readily available.

What are you basing your bias numbers on that they would be "perfect"? Not doubting you, it's just that one thing I have found.....the "sweet spot" for bias may be calculated and what not, but it still boils down to the driver's feel and what he/her is most comfortable with.BAC5.2 wrote:Josh - If I did the fronts and rears, the bias would be perfect. Josh, I'll re-run the numbers and we'll discuss them. I want as much input as I can get, but I don't want to concrete anything until I have a more complete setup (i.e. have the bracket drawn and know how much it will all cost).
I based my "perfect" numbers because they were close to STi Brembo numbers, I consider the STi to have a near perfect pedal feel.

Pedal feel really has little to do with bias.
Run the numbers and we can chat.

Technically no.....however one could argue the point different calipers have different stiffnesses, which will affect pedal feel due to flexing.....and since different calipers can affect the bias....they indirectly affect feel.
