A quickie on Top hats

Post by Subaru for Life »

Hi all, I came across a set of '02 WRX strut assemblies with really low miles and decided to put 'em on my '93 L N/A FWD. The front assemblies should bolt right on, but the rears I'm going to use my existing top hat assemblies.

My question of the day is, do the top hats including the rubber dampener wear out with age? I'll change 'em if I have to, but rather not if it isn't a wear and tear item.

Thanks in advance,
Pye

I feel let-down . . . came in here expecting to see some sex on the front fender of a car. :(

As long as the rubber is not damaged, is pliable, and in decent shape, you should be good to reuse them.

Removing the strut top bolt can be a bitch, especially if it's crusty. I had to use an extra vise-grip to hold onto a tophat stud for leverage. It messed up the thread, but I replaced it anyway.
Advice: use a vise to hold the strut assembly if you plan to re-use top hats.

Actually I was thinking of using a pneumatic impact driver, after I put on the spring compressors of course

What do you all think?
