UPDATE: Legacy Re-furbish(ing)Complete!!!-New pics added-

Post by stipro »

The body work has begun, I was so tired of the rust on the rear quarters, that I have decided to do the whole car.
So far a new fender has been fitted, the rear door has had dent/rust removal, drivers rear quater and dogleg has had rust cut out and new metal welded in.
Progress will be updated, if anyone really cares :D

perhaps you should change the title to refurbishing... as it is a present tense project. I love that color though so make sure you paint it the same color.

Yes I will be painting it the same color, I am going to paint the body trim and side mirrors body color as well and leaving the chrome strip.

You could say rust like most people do :P.

Iron (III) Oxide

because the Iron has an oxidation of +3 in this instance.

Sry, I'm bored.

is it Fe2O3 I can't remember but it seems right.

Looks like it's coming along nicely. Same awesome colour as my leggy :)

I did a full paintjob on a car once, hated it after the first day of work... what a pain in ass. I applaud people who have the patience to do that stuff.

Nice looking work, I can't wait to see the car when it's done.

I wish I had the skill to do those kind of repairs. Good luck with the rest!

what gauge is the sheetmetal? what settings did you have the welder on, and what size wire? looks like you cut a section out of a donor car?

I actually used the old front fender that I replaced

I will get back to you on this.

I wanted to do this right because so many people do the bondo bucket thing, and I have a little more respect for my car :D, and the only filler on the car is to feather fill the areas where the dents were pulled out.

O.K so its been a long time coming. The photo's in my first post were taken in December 05.
A few days later it had gotten much to cold to do anymore work on the car without a heated garage.
So unfortunately with other projects due, I drove my car around for near 8 months like this.
Image
I was getting really depressed and embarresed to drive it around looking like that.

So again after 8ish months, (July 1, 2006) I rolled the car into the garage for a complete body overhaul, not stopping until the car was finally done.

There was about two weeks of metal prep done, cutting and welding new patches to replace old rust.
Image

After that the car was off to another garage where all of the primer/painting would be done.
Image
Image

After numerous coats of color build primer, the car looked like this.
Image
then sanded,
Image
This was all followed by an 11 hour day of wetsanding the primer with 400grit.

Then the color was layed. For some reason the clear had a wierd reaction to the base paint and the paint had "super" orange peel.
A bit discouraging. (notice how grainy the light reflection is)
Image
Next came another 2 days of color sanding with 1000, then 1500grit.
Image
The color sanding was followed up by two days of polishing.

So after 1 month and 20 days of work, and dedication to the car I so love, I got this. Enjoy.

I will add a few more pics in the next day or so, I only just brought the car home yesterday night.

Iam really pleased, and the best part is, I did this all myself.

Well, actually this was my first one, believe it or not. I dont do anything half-assed really, so I did alot of reading and asked alot of questions to people in the know. Now I know :D

Yeah, thats what I thought. I saw it on a Legacy once and decided that it looked quite attractive. I think it turned out ok.

Looks really good... But i'm curious, does it have no clear coat now? So isn't it going to fade really quickly now?

Well actually I sort of saved myself from that happening. The last two coats were shot 50/50, paint w/clear so I could wet sand it, regardless of how it was going to turm out.
