The low fuel light most likely still works. The fuel gauge sender almost always stops working over time. There are two solutions that I know of:
1. Some people think running some fuel additive with tecron(sp) can clean up the contacts on the sender. I'm a little suspect to this idea, but it's worth a shot.
2. Replacement of the sender/contacts all together. Requires removal of the pump and some other bits.
You could just always figure out what your average mpg is with the trip and just go on that - that's what most of us do. Although, like I said, the low fuel light usually tends to work even though the gauge doesn't. Get it down to around 1.5 gallons (on a 20mpg average car, that's like 280 miles) and the light should go on.

Here's the wiring diagram.

You may want to start checking continuity and see if you can narrow down the issue to wiring, or the fuel level senders.
