Would it be possible to turn a 4.11 final drive tranny into a 3.9 FD?

I'm curious why you want to go back to a 3.9?

Umm, not without replacing a lot of things in the tranny. Might as well just go get a 3.9 tranny and matching rear diff.

some backstory: I am going to be replacing the tranny in a '92 SS. I have found a great match (STi ver II, 4.11, but short RA ratios).
I am trying to get some more out of the gearing so I don't have to have the car at 3600+ rpms to go 80.
I have considered just swapping out 5th gear, but I don't know where to get a long 5th gear that will fit.

You will need to change out the ring and pinion in the transaxle with a 3.90 one.
Kind of a bitch if you ask me...

seems like my best bet is a 5th gear from a wrx. I just hope it'll fit...

My 4EAT is on its way out. I'm planning on getting a 5MT 3.9 put in during December...
