My new (to me) 1992 Legacy Turbo 4EAT pics

Post by shtbxr22 »

Hello everyone,
I just picked this gem up for $400 bucks, about 3 weeks ago. It ran like crap when I got it, but have since put the timing belt back where it should be, resealed everything on the front of the engine(Crank/Cam seals/Left cam o-ring/oil pump reseal/wrist pin access plug seals). Also had to repair the end of the crank with some weld in the keyway(pulley, and sprocket were "eating each other") used new sprocket/pulley, and welded a stud in the end of the crank, due to the crank bolt snapping off in the crank from way too much loctite. Well now she runs like a raped-ape, but need to figure out the overheating/high idle concern......oh yeah, did I mention it had about 6-7 vacuum leaks. Fixed now though. Blew a hole in bypass coolant hose the other day too. fixed that too. So I took it on a 150 mile trip today, and the shittiest thing happened, last exit my temp guage started climbing, then went back down.....hmmmm.
well, I don't know, i'll start tomorrow troubleshooting. I plan on doing a intercooling job, more boost, as soon as I figure out the rest. Thanks again for allowing me into this great place.

That's not too bad. You're staring into the realm of having to replace things soon, but you can't beat that price. I assume the timing belt looked good enough to put back on because it was recently done?

Check the cooling system for air. That might be why the temp guage climbs a little. Or possibly the mixture is not right. There are a couple threads on this subject and the search function should lead you to them.

On that note - I'm curious about how your coolant resivoir looks (the one with the pressure cap). Those can start to get funky at that mileage, if not sooner.

I've come to the conclusion of either a thermostat, or clogged radiator(from stop leak)....will replace the thermostat first, obviously(free), then flush radiator to see what kind of chunks come out, then if that doesn't work i'll have to do a radiator, but hopefully the troubleshooting will end with a new thermostat, and coolant. I also replaced the T-belt when I was in there. There were no more timing marks left. And as for the expansion tank.....I don't even look at it funny, because I know how sensitive, and hard to find they are.

Great deal and I love that color. Am I wrong or are the "Subaru" and "Turbo AWD" logos in the wrong order?

It is very possible the "turbo4wd", and "subaru" are backwards. The picture in the book @ work for the parts location had subaru in the right, and a blank in the left for all the variations (L/Lsi/turbo etc.) Although either works for me, the car had no badges, so I had to go off of what I found......Maybe since the turbo has a bit to do with exhaust, maybe it should be above the exhaust?

Forgot the update on troubleshooting has ended.....The coolant temp sensor has intermittent false readings to the ECM. I watched it with the Select Monitor, and it would dip into 110-130 Degrees Farenheit, after being @ operating temp, so it would not turn the fans on when it should have. I'm using the defrost to "bypass" the ECM to turn the fans on, until I get the sensor.
