So I put a new turbo on the legacy...

Post by PacmanSTI »

I finally got around to not being lazy anymore and decided to put some new goodies on the legacy. I started small with a TurboXS rotated mount adapter pipe with a t3 flange. Then I went ahead and set my old used gt30r onto the pipe and bolted it all up. Then came the fun part, I tried to close the hood. Disaster. I ended up having to chop the inner frame of my hood, then tried to close the hood again... still nothing. So i ended up having to put washers onto where the hood bolts on to space the hood up a little bit so I can close the hood. It's also kind fo cool because it looks kind of jdm drifter ish and stuff like that. SO, long story short the car has a big ass turbo with a rotated kit and custom down pipe. The car is faster at 15lbs on this turbo then it was on the 16g when it made 317lb/ft. Thinking about turning the boost up makes me all jittery and things like that. I'll post some good pics of the setup as soon as I get a chance. Unless of course Phil can upload that pic I sent him. I'm hoping to get it on the dyno early next week. I'll keep everyone updated. Oh yea, full spool before 4k on a 30r is AWESOME!

Thanks for the Pic phil, I couldn't get one uploaded.

So yea, update time. I took the car and last night after I put a full exhaust on it and started doing some tuning. I started at wastegate boost (.8bar) and got the air fuels straight. By the time I was at 15psi I was cracking the tires loose on the 1-2 shift, so I kept turning it up. As of right now, the peak boost reading on my Blitz Dual-SBC is 1.63bar. 11.4:1 afr, but the only problem is for some reason the coupler on my throttle body kept popping off. I guess some genius (hint hint PHIL) decided to cut the throttle body to fit a top mount at some point in its life. However, for the time that pipe stayed on at 24psi it was ridiculous to say the very least. I'm thinking I might go nuts and try 2bar... I haven't recorded any knock yet and the injectors are only at 73% IDC. So we'll see how it goes.

Lol, good lord. Throttle body will be an easy fix.

Cracking all 4 loose on what kind of 1-2 shift? Rev-limiter style, or lift-throttle-no-clutch?

I'm suprised you're having problems closing the hood on that.

Thanks again for posting the pics Phil. As you can see I still have a little bit of cleaning up to do in the engine bay as this install was done quite quickly. It is however functional and for now that's all i'm worried about. My next step in the process is getting a filter on the thing. I think I am going to wait until I get the hydra so I don't have to worry about a maf. So what do ya think guys? Big Enough?

If you're using an unshielded up pipe, there's a chance you're gonna cook the power steering lines.

This makes me really want an external gate. I'd like mine to be that straight.

I saw this beast run in person today… It’s definitely one of the quickest 1st Gen Legacy’s out there that’s for sure. I would expect to see an 11-second 1/4 mile run out of it!

Nice work :-D

The injectors... To be honest I just took a set of stock 92-94 na injectors and modded them. As for the hotside, it's a .63 a/r. Oh yea, and I found out it's not a 30R. It's a non ball bearing 50trim.

Update: I finally found the limit of my modded inj./ modded maf combo, 25.5psi. Time to find a new alternative!

Tuning with a TurboXS DTEC fuel computer.

Time and money? Edwin cares not about such trivial things. It's time and money well spent.

I think that has to be one of the funniest things I have ever heard in response to that question.

It's the TurboXS prototype kit. He's one of the very few people in the world to have one (and the only one in the world with a car that has been tuned and is daily driven).

TurboXS will be releasing their External Wastegate Uppipe very soon, and the rotated mount adapter as well. Plus, they have a downpipe for that rotated setup that will be a sung, but workable fit for the Legacy.
