I have a very hi-res version of that image. I must have stared at the details for a half hour...it's very cool.

When I build my own car I'm going to get one of these to power it providing it's no wider than the EJ.

As big of a Subaru fan as I am, I would hold off on owning one just yet.

It is something completely new for Subaru. Not just the diesel in general, but the direct injection (which I believe I see in that photo).

Plus, as the article said, there has never been a boxer diesel before.

I am quite curious as to how high it can rev though. It may have a heavier diesel bottom end, but it's still an inherently balanced engine.

Time will tell. Let's see how it does in real-world use.

Direct injection is not a new thing by any means...

And is the simplest way to make a diesel

I'd definitely be waiting a few years to see how they turn out before getting one. knowing subaru theyll most likely be one hell of an engine though.
DLC can you post or link to that high res pic, the small one makes my eyes hurt.

They go hand in hand. Direct gas injection stems from diesels and isn't new tech at all. The only worry I can think of would be head gaskets, but it's a 2.0. I still would bet the 2.2 closed deck could handle diesel use. The bottom end is about as strong an aluminum block as you can get. Honda's had an alloy diesel and I'm not aware of any problems (not sold here, though).

Just got to keep an eye on the gas gauge. It's easy to forget you need it with a diesel and then you have to purge the fuel system. I think this would be sick in a sub-2000 lbs 3-wheeler.

See: EA, EJ engines.

And for the record, they didnt screw up the EA until they overhauled it and added timing belts with the EA82. The EA81 was, and still is a very bulletproof design, capable of 500,000+ miles.

Regardless, i welcome the subaru diesel to the industry, just hope they roll with it and dont give up after 3 years.

The EA81 was the last of the ohv EAs and were great motors with a fun punch of torque off the line for such a small engine, but the earlier EAs from the '70's were terrible on HGs. My mechanic said he used to line them up all day long.

Do I see variable valve timing? Also, the diriect injection fits nicely where a spark plug would be.
