wobbly shifter :(

Post by wildacex187 »

hi i just recently purchased a legacy ss. its a fun car but the shifter is all wobbly. wat can be the culprit here? i was told something about tranny bushings but wat came to mind was the tranny mount.

New shift bushings like these:
http://turninconcepts10.chainreactionwe ... 02840dc2bc
and a new return spring like this:
http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=20945

would probably help out a lot.

Note those Kartboy bushings are for the stay bar and while they will help a ton they will not eliminate all the slop. I found the bushings on my knuckle between the gearbox selector fork and the linkage were missing entirely. These can be gotten from the dealer, prolly going to have to be special ordered but they make a HUGE difference. Or just do what i did and find yourself a WRX linkage and get the kartboys and call it a day. Here are some pics if it helps:

That is the one between the lever and the linkage inside the cabin. Then the other two sets of two are on the knuckle which looks like this:

http://turninconcepts10.chainreactionwe ... 02840dc2bc

I do not know the part# off hand, ill dig through my pictures when i get home and see if i can find them.

As for the square one it goes on the back side of the stay bar (the rod the ball of the shift lever seats in) and has the circular bushing in the front. It bolts to the back side of the chassis. Seen here:

http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c389/ ... CN0647.jpg

FYI these kartboy bushings are universal for 5mt staybars. IE it will work with the old legacy or a wrx assembly.

Oh i should also add that knuckle i linked you to is the newer version. As you can see in this picture:

http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c389/ ... CN0643.jpg

The old legacy style has a female end with the bushings in the lever bar where the WRX one has them in the knuckle.

well im suggesting get new bushings for the old style legacy knuckle from subaru. The updated style knuckle from that site will not work with the old legacy shift assembly, you have to get the entire assembly from a newer rs or wrx

Well you need 4 bushings for the knuckle, i think they are all the same but im not sure, ill get you part numbers when i get home.

The walbro is just the normal 255lph pump i got local with a subaru install kit. Everything should drop right in

It doesnt break, it simply falls off the metal post that it is attached to. This post is very short, but still wholly funtional.

There are 2 very different versions of the legacy shifter. Doug, I think you're referring to the first version, as the second revision was a one piece design.

wildacex187, what year is your legacy?

The one-piece knuckle that you guys are talking about is part # 35047AC030. The newer Subarus use this from the factory, so that in the event they need shifter bushings later, it's a couple fewer steps.

This knuckle, as others have said, is necessary to bolt stock WRX or newer short-throw shifter designs to the shift rod on the transmission. Legacy777 used it to install his STi short-throw shifter in his Legacy when he did his AWD/5MT swap.

my legacy is 1994 and its white with a rust pearl lol.

subyluvr that part number will directly bolt on to stock shifter?

can i use this shifter on my car?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/93-94-95 ... 3571QQrdZ1

how about this pulley?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/93-01-94 ... 2922QQrdZ1

i know these are cheap ebay parts but i dont want to pour too much money into this car. i have another money pit for that :(

quick question. sometimes when i brake the pedal goes down about an inch from where i move to and the brake pressure doesnt change. the last owner told me its hill assist something. can it be disabled without disabling the abs? hows the abs on these cars anyway?

i've been reading up and saw that 94's are rare to come with vlsd's. i would really like to have at least a rear vlsd for the winter. will something like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-SUBA ... enameZWD1V
fit into the r160 housing?

can i use a r200 vlsd instead since i have one off of my s13 with shafts?

No. If you use that knuckle, you have to use the new-style shifter. If you want to keep your stock setup, then you'll have to replace the bushings in the stock knuckle.

start with the return spring.

it is the cheapest option. and if it solves the problem? awesome. if not? you are only out 1.50. and you have a new spring.
