Any reason not to go stroker?

Heads, valves, pistons, rods, crankshaft, etc...

Any reason not to go stroker?

Post by All_talk »

So I’ve got my EJ22T torn down and inspected, crank needs replaced do to blow out keyway, and cylinders are at the wear limit, so a bore is in order. I was looking at the .020 over forged Wiseco pistons but the price for the stroker pistons is about the same and since I gotta buy a used crank anyway... to stroke or not to stroke, that is the question?

The rest of the details on the build include: EJ25 DOHC heads, EJ20G intake & injectors (440cc), VF-24 turbo, TMIC, 3” TBE. What I’m shooting for is a good drivable street car, not monster top end power, off boost low end is important and I think the stroker idea plays right into that. I know the DOHC heads might drop a little bottom end, but the CR will stay near the stock 8.0:1 or maybe slightly higher and the VF24 is a quick spooling turbo that’s still 300hp capable. I plan to start boost at about 12psi (below fuel cut), then add EM / injectors and ramp up from there.

Your thoughts?

If your into a full rebuild anyways and your after some low-end, the only reason not to do a stroker is the rods. You need EJ25 rods to match whatever phase crank you choose. Phase 1 has 48 mm rod bearings. Phase 2 has 52 mm rod bearings.

Phase 1 EJ25 rods are *said* to be among the weakest factory rods, so you might budget good rods into the build.

maybe go with a 257 bottom end instead? all told a 2.35 build shouldnt be too far off of a used 257.
if youre looking for a new crank, you can buy my whole 22e shortblock with 148k on it for $50. its in seattle.

Finding a good used crank and rods from an EJ25 could take a while. Seems like they used to be all over the place.

I think budget or time are the only reasons not to go stroker.

The rod I bent probably bent under a timing belt mishap.
