I went to one of those shops and saw an 'innercooler' once. Apparently it really IS for a forced induction application --the dildo is meant to go in the freezer first!

I have to get those for my women when I overheat them. I keep a few of 'em in stock next to the ice cube trays and frozen pizzas.

They were all 2.2 motors in the Legacy from '90-'94 reguardless if it was manual or auto, but if it's a turbo model, then it's an EJ22T. If it's N/A (nat. aspirated) then it's an EJ22.

EJ18's showed up in low end Imprezas, and EJ25's didn't show up in the Legacy until '96.

Well...
You'd be changing out quite a bit to do it.
- different ECU
- different full exhaust
- different intake manifold
- different intake tubing
- different injectors (possibly optional depending on turbo size)
- turbo
- intercooler (again optional, but highly recommended)
- many misc. hoses & additional odds & ends

All said & done, you could be selective in what you pay & where you get it from and likely pay $1k or less.
Picking up a used VF-11 (stock Legacy turbo) and other tid bits wouldn't be too hard.

Use the search function and look up turbo swap, or engine swap. Browse the topic's content and remember to take everything with a grain of salt. Everyone has a different take or opinion on situations around here.

BTW, look just below and to the right of your power steering res. and you'll see a casting area that shows EJ22 right on the block. The EJ20 only showed up in the JDM Imprezas and the early US market WRX's.

Until you go with a larger turbo (which requires many more supporting mods, like fuel delivery upgrades & such) you'd lose HP with a front mount vs. the top mount. The longer length of piping to the front & such would cause longer spool up times. This would take you longer to achieve the desired effect you are going for. The top mount being right next to the turbo allows for shorter spool up time. Basically you hit full boost much quicker.

Sorry, the front mount might look cooler, but it isn't the most desirable item when running stock equipment.

well, they say you learn new things every day. thanks for the info. yeah, i just want a small turbo (if i really do even want one) for a little fun, because this is my car for the mountain (snowboarding with friends and such) so it wouldn't be a big turbo, I'll probably keep it NA, but I just might turbo it

Nate,
I'll have some stuff you would need for a turbo swap coming up in the next few months. Harness, ECU, exh, heads and intake mani, and tdo04 with TMIC. Basically, everything you'd need except the shortblock. I'll keep you posted.

you know you could always just buy an ej20g with a 5m/t off of ebay for about $1k too.

my friend and i swapped one into his 95 Impreza L. It was pretty straight forward if you have a basic idea of what you're doing. The wiring took us the longest to do, but everything was done in about two weeks and for $1k, that's the biggest performance increase you can get lol.

he went from like 115hp to 240hp and 4.44 gears lol.

And for the record... I believe the NAs were an EJ22E while the turbos were EJ22Ts (minus the (s) for non plural use, aka singular form, so its an EJ22T)... lol
