Help! Installing new shifter bushings...

Post by MinnGreenGT »

I have finally undertaken the process of replacing my non-existent (really) shifter bushings on my 1992 Legacy SS (5MT obviously).

I was able to remove the forward bolts on the linkage assembly - but only because there was no longer ANY bushing material left in the part. Now that I've got the replacement bushings in place - I no longer have enough rotation in the linkage to re-insert the cross bolt.

I have decided that the "pin" attaching the 1st linkage to the tranny input shaft will have to come out & be replaced. I started poking (and pounding) around this pin, but was only able to remove a mysterious "inner" pin. The outer section of this pin won't budge a bit.

What's the trick to removing the pin? :smt017

Also, I seem to recall awhile back a thread with photos of someone documenting this bushing replacement process... but no amount of searching on my part has resulted in any successful links or photos. Any help there too?

You need something like what I made out of some round bar to help keep the "punch" alligned properly while you wack at it with a big hammer.

You need a bigger punch. Wail on it and it will come out. Or break.

I matched up a allen key (dont remember the size any more) and dremmeled the edges off. Worked perfectly! Also, while your at it, if your talking about the bushings on the boss: I lightly ground the boss "knuckle" to a slight taper(narrower towards the rear of the car), bought a 1/2" by 2" bolt (w/smooth upper shaft) and lock tite nut, cut off a bit of the thread, packed the knuckle with piston grease place 1/2"washers on either side of the boss and then used the bolt and nut to reconnect it all. VIOLA! You have an inexpensive solid shifter bushing that does not require removal of the drive axle or exhaust to disassemble. I checked it out after about 4mo of use and no signs of abnormal wear. I know that this will sound ghetto to you guys with the big tools and big bucks but it works great and cost me a few cents!!
