'05 WRX Clutch Slave and/or Master Cylinders into SS?

Post by shemoves »

Will an '05 WRX Clutch Slave cylinder work with a '92 SS Master Cylinder?

Story: My '92 SS is getting an '05 WRX transmission (and other needed parts). We found that we could not bolt up the stock Clutch Slave Cylinder. My question is, can I just get the Clutch Slave Cylinder from and '05 WRX and bolt that up, or do I also need the Master Cylinder, or will none of that work at all?

Match the slave and master cylinder bore sizes as they were originally. If both cars use the same diameter cylinders, you can mix and match. Otherwise using a different combination will change the pedal effort.

I don't know if the hydro line hardware is compatible.

Do you think if I were to just get both from a WRX that they would bolt onto the Legacy?

Should bolt right up.

Just FYI, I just put an '06 tranny with '06 slave cylinder bolted to '91 master cylinder, and everything works beautifully.

Subarus are like Legos, which just happened to be my favorite toy when I was a kid.

Well put. That's one of the reasons I dig them. I still play with Legos on occasion, but I've got an 11-year-old brother I can use an excuse. ;-)

If the '06 and the '91 mixed, I'd imagine the '05 and '92 would also.

Can't hurt to try.

I already had a braided SS hose which I could switch around the ends on, so I had to change a fitting or two, but the clutch pedal effort actually feels better than when I had all SS parts in the car.

IronM, what do you mean by the clutch pedal effort is better--smoother, softer, or ???

It's a bit softer (though not really soft) and the engagement point is more in the middle instead of at the very top like it was. Also, it seems to engage more smoothly, though that may just be a result of the engagement point and pedal effort changing......

Need help quick...The SS has an intermediate section (along the clutch hydro line, before it gets to the slave cylinder) that the WRX does not normally. It's attached to a fairly large rectangular bracket with rubber bushings. Do I need this piece or can I just remove it from the system?

I removed it.

Interestingly enough, I can't even seem to find anything about this unit in the FSM.....

It's a damper unit. I did not install it when I did my swap, and no I haven't been able to find any info about it either.
