Removing Engine from Transmission

Post by breakit »

I tried searching but no luck. I am trying to pull the engine out of my 92 Legacy, it is an automatic, and I cannot find anywhere to access the flywheel bolts to remove the transmission from the flywheel. I really do not want to pull them both if I do not have to. Am I missing something really obvious?

Thanks

There's a cover you can remove to get access to the torque converter bolts, which separates the engine from the transmission, i'll go take a picture its kinda hard to explain cause it is obvious. Took me a bit to find it too.

That would be great. I read in one of my searches about the cover but I couldn't find anything that looked like one.

Thanks

This photo is from one of douglas vincent's posts, i circled the torque converter cover

remove the cover and spin the crank with the pulley bolt to turn it to gain access to the bolts. Hope that helps

Occasionally that cover will be missing. It is likely behind the flex plate. That's where I found mine...

if your pulling the engine i think its easier to remove the intake manifold first anyway

hmmm, that could be a challenge, if it is really "seized" how to you plan on getting the piston pin's out to crack the block?

all i need to do is save the auto tranny, the block is to become a scrap piece of aluminum. I might like to separate the block halves just to get some knowledge and experience on doing so. another engine will be taking this ones place if i dont sell the car.

Does it have oil in it? If not, pour oil in it and break it loose the other way. My friend and I ran out of oil in a 94 na legacy on our way to fairbanks, we were 200 miles away. We poured in some oil we got from a passerby, and then took a breaker bar, turned the motor the opposite direction, and fired it right up. He put another 25000 miles on the motor.

If you can get the engine forward enough, the attached torque converter will slide out of the transmission. I'd guess that it needs to come out at least 10". I would definately replace the front oil seal on the trans after stressing it out like that also.

You will need to remove the radiator and the trans dog bone. I would also suggest jacking up the front of the trans to help get the angle you'll need.

Since the engine is scrap, you could also try to pull the spark plugs and get some diesel or kerosene in the cylinders, leave it set for a few days, then try to break it loose.

update.
i was able to turn the crank pulley backwards, so it isnt seized, just stuck at the point where the rod is jamming up thru the top of the block

i bet if i can pull out the obstuction, it might even still run.
