Reddevil lives again.

Post by douglas vincent »

As you may all know, the tranny lost first gear in September and the wagon sat for a long lonely time. Then I finally pulled the motor and tranny out and rebuilt the tranny. I used a 1997 STI gear set. Should give me 125mph 4th @ 6700 rpm with 205/55/16 tires.

In the meantime I have purchased a 4-1 WRX/STI header and started building another
AND BETTER engine than I currently am running. 2006 RS block, STI crank, H-beam rods, ACL Race bearings, JE pistons, EJ20R heads. Pretty stout.

Except I can't get anyone to sell me rings at an affordable price so I haven't installed the pistons yet.....

So I decided to put the current engine back in. But with the 4-1 exaust header...... NOT! The turbo I am using would not be an easy adaptation. It is big enough that it really needs to sit much further back than a stock Subaru turbo. So out the window that idea went.

So for now I am back to the original everything. And I am damn impressed again. It has SO MUCH TORQUE off boost. And the supercharger is not even turned on, the air is simply being sucked/forced through the supercharger and even with that restriction, it feels so flipping good! I will get the wiring sorted out a bit cleaner and the supercharger will be back in operation but until I get to the dyno, I will stay at 16 psi, which puts me into the high 12's.

I did figure out why back in september I was only able to get 14 psi. My modified MAF was leaking pretty bad. The epoxy had cracked and I was loosing boost from the MAF itself. I am pretty sure I have fixed that problem.

And as for the oil I have been leaking at the turbo? Two problems. Problem one - The drain pipe needs a gasket at the turbo. Problem two - The drain hose is directly over the turbo mount bracket, so its forced in a BAD way to KINK back down to the drain hole. This causes the oil to back up badly.... Maybe even why I lost bearings so fast.....

Speedo still doesnt work. Not sure why. But I will go out and do some driving with someone with a walki talkie and get some gear/speed estimates and sharpie them on the speedo plastic. I DO NOT WANT A SPEEDING TICKET! Especially now that 2nd will do something crazy like 65 mph at 6700 rpm! so that means cruising along at 3000 rpm is 30 mph already....

Need to do some major wiring clean up. What a rats nest.

Need to clean the interior of the wagon. It is not water proof and there is nasty ass mold growing everywhere. EWWWWWWW! The cupholder is DISGUSTING!

Oh my God, its a blast!

And the devil is down again....

I drove it around the block twice, then today got insurance and drove it out to the freeway. No issues......

Till I finally shifted to 5th. Actually, still no issues.

Then I attempted to shift OUT of fifth.

Hmmmm. I seem to be stuck in fifth on the freeway. This is a problem.

So I do not take my exit I wanted, but continue to drive over the Columbia river to Vancouver (on 205) and loop around (no stopping) and drive back into Portland. Suddenly on the way back, I am able to pop it out of gear. Yea!!!!

Nooooooo! I am now stuck in nuetral. So I pull over but am suddenly able to shift into 1st and 2nd and 3rd. Great! So I pull back onto the freeway and get up to speed and shift to 4th.

Nope. But I can get 5th.

So I now have 1-3, 5th and no 4th or reverse.

Tranny is almost out. Crappola.

I predict 3 things. The "cage" on 5th (remember I am running STI gears) got spun around, Reverse is tweaked on the gear selector, or something in the main case is out of whack.

"Fixed"

Now I just need to put it back in.

The problem was the fifth gear "cage" that the new transmissions have. You need the newer tranmission center diff, because the center diff has a slot cast into that holds the "cage" in place.

So which pistons are in it? Comp. ratio?

Sounds like the 20R heads are a blast.

got it in, completely buttoned up and ready to run @ 6:15, but needed tranny fluid. gonna go out and do that now.

AWD_addict - Mahle 100mm pistons. The heads on this motor are older twinturbo heads.

Congratulations. It always sucks to put the car together only to find out you have to take it apart again. You did a quick job though.

A quick job which I am paying for! I am so sore, I pulled/strained the chest muscles right in the middle of the chest. I was almost crippled this morning.

Got to drive it on the freeway today! WOW.

But I do have a boost leak, thats got to be it, as I can't boost over 12-13 psi and it used to hit 30 psi at 4000rpm....
