What would be an Ideal turbo for quick spools.
I want to find out what my 2.2 liter stock turbo (from legacy) could be replaced with. I want a turbo that spools quick and is better than stock. Basicly want to push more boost but Not any where near 20psi maybe 15 at the max. I have heard these engines have been forged. When do the cylinders start wearing out ?? Thanks for reading. (I'm New)
Your stock turbo will spool up faster, period. It will not, however, support sustained levels of high boost...I ran mine at 12 psi for years, full boost was on at 1500 rpm, but it ran out of breath around 4800-5000. The TD-04 will make more boost, thru higher rpms, but will spool slower. The smaller the turbine/compressor wheels, the faster spool up, larger turbo = slower spool, all things being equal. That's the trade-off, and the decision you must make. The stock turbo, turned up to 11-12 psi, will launch the car like a rocket, but be prepared to shift quickly.
Use a manual boost controller, and an intercooler is a must if you're going to raise the boost.
Fuel cut kicks in above 12 psi, so no matter what turbo you use, the ECU will shut you down unless you run an electronic fuel cut defender (FCD...search for it) or engine management system.

I don't think the TD04s extra lag would be a big deal on a 2.2l motor, but Aerotech is right the bigger the turbo the more lag you'll have (most of the time).
In my SS max boost with the TD04 took literally 1.5 seconds based on the G-tech PRO's G-Force recordings on WOT off idle runs on a 2.0l (EJ20G) motor / 4eat.
From the drivers seat there was a tiny bit of lag (enough time to say one & get the "t" sound of two out of your mouth once you floored the car from a stop on idle) then you got a nice 17psi surge that tapered to 15psi @ high rpms.
OP - If you planned on just upping boost without the supporting mods you will probably kill the motor.

Yeah, it's not a huge wait, the TD-04 was one of my first mods on the car... it actually suits the motor much better, gives you a more linear power delivery, less like driving a shotgun as with the stock turbo.
The TD-05-16G I have now has even a bit more lag, but you learn to drive around it, keep the revs up, fan the clutch if needed.

Thanks for help
So if I got a TD04 I would need an intercooler ?? If I bought the turbo and intercooler I'd probably reprogram the ECU. Would that be enough ??

The EJ22T ECU isn't reprogrammable...you would need a piggyback unit (such as Perfect Power SMT6)
The EJ22T is not full forged; just forged crank and rods, with molybdenum coated cast pistons
I have yet to see one with worn out cylinder walls...they will last forever as long as you keep them friendly with the AFRs

+1 The TD05 is noticeably laggier than the TD04 - on my little 2.0l max boost comes in @ about 3700RPM which is not the best match for a 4eat, but top end power is noticeably better than the TD04.
On 2.2l low compression cars full boost is said to be @ about 32-3300rpms - I can't say as my high compression/big port (phaseII) 2.2 + TD05 = instant boost on the OBS-t.

I WROTE THIS IN ANOTHER POST, BUT RATHER THAN HIT YOU WITH THE SEARCH STICK I COPIED & PASTED IT FOR YOU!
I'd start with a fresh tune-up (good quality fluids) then I'd max out the stock turbo.
1. K&N filter / c-cup
2. Intercooling - pick your poison (FMIC, TMIC, Alky)
3. Boost set right before fuel cut (this was 10psi on my car)
4. 3" TBE
5. Walbro fuel pump
6. Fuel cut defender
7. Max out stock turbo (15psi-?(I never got to max out my VF11))
I'd estimate about 200-215 crank HP @ this point (someone may have real #'s somewhere).
8. E/M
9. Injectors
10. Upgraded turbo (VF10, TD04, VF8, TD05, GT2871R, GT35R....)
? HP when its all said & done - it all depends on what components you use.
VF10 is bigger than the VF11 - look in the turbo section for pics
There is a Upgrade sequence somewhere - I just forgot where it is.

This stuff does not need to cost much, just take things 1 step @ a time.
Here are some prices to budget per mod.
1. K&N Intake/c-cup fabbed/... - $40-100
2. I/C - $50-$300+
3. Boost controller - $25-500
4. TBE exhaust $150-300+(depending on how lucky or skilled you are)
5. Walbro - $100
6. FCD $3-$55
7. free as you already paid for the boost controller on #3
* A L/W pulley should free up 1-3 HP - $60-120
If you try to stay on the low end of the price ranges everything should cost about $450-500
