OBD Stuff...

Question...Are OBD 1 scanning/diagnostic tools
worthwhile? If so, what can be done with them besides
clearing the CEL? I know you can get some information
as to why the code is displayed, but what value does
this have? Thanks for all the info. In the last few
weeks I have learned a lot more about my own car. I
appreciate the help.

Personally, OBD 1 scanner stuff probably really isn't that good an investment. With the OBD 1 computers you can check the diagnostic codes yourself, clear them, and so forth. Maybe the only other thing you would get with a scanner would be see some inputs from sensors when car is running.

Brian-In addition to what Josh gave you: the scan tool will give you what is called a "diagnostic tree" to follow while attempting to eliminate any problems. It will highlight any specific codes relative to each screen you choose on the scanner. It`s very useful, expensive & usually relagated to dealerships.---ROD (AZ.)

It probably depends on the version of OBD that you have but we are
trying several data logging systems on some later models most with OBD
2 and are having good results and getting a lot of information. You
might want to check on the web or contact me Wed. and I will give you
a few leads to try.
