I took a ride in Thomas's car today. Veddy nice. The V34 spools RIGHT THE FUCK UP. and the power is as smooth as the dyno shows.

Veddy clean as well!

I don't suppose you have plots with the boost and air/fuel curves as well? Also, what fuel was the engine tuned on?

There is a bunch of torque, but I expected more, even on a Mustang dyno.

Legacy777, the fabrication work was done by John Grant at Forged Performance (see the dyno sheets). He does some beautiful work.

Today was my first day doing some serious driving with the VF34 in and I'm loving it. A little time in the twisty bits in the hills and it's all worth it. Spool-up is definitely quicker and the car feels more responsive as a result. I was reminded just how sticky these cars are in the curves too.

I was impressed by Doug's latest project today, also. It's a very different creature from my car, but threw me back in the seat nonetheless. Kudos.

Tuned on Ye Olde Shell 92 (up to 10% ethanol). Dynoed at 20psi, currently running 19. I don't have plots, but cruising AFRs are about 14-14.5 and 11-11.5 at WOT.

So. I've learned another expensive lesson: Turn down the dang boost to run on the track!
In my enthusiasm to get out on PIR for my first track day, I neglected to set the boost to something less than 20psi. The engine survived almost two full sessions before self destructing. By the time I heard the rattle, she'd died and would not restart. Coasted all the way into the paddock. Once cooled down, she would restart, but with loud clanking and some water in the oil. I'll be doing the engine teardown soon to see what exactly I broke and how to proceed. Depending on the state of things, this may be an excuse to go to an EJ20G for the better flowing heads...
That was some of the most fun I've had right up to breaking it. Topping 110 on the straights and sticky as heck in the corners. The VF34 spools sooo fast. She'll be back.
I finished the track day out in a borrowed, stock '06 Cooper S, which was fun, but understeers badly and felt laggy after driving the SS. Also rode shotgun for an insanely fast session with an advanced driver in his 470hp, twin turbo Audi S4. How many GT3s can you pass in one day? I was a bit wobbly after that one, but what a learning experience!

I couldn't really tell you with any certainty what the AFRs were when it let go. 'Round about 11-11.5 in the straights on earlier laps.
I'll try to pull the engine in the next few weeks and assess damage. It'll be a question of finding the cheapest way to get back on the road in close to the current configuration. I'm determined that this be only a minor setback.
Also, I probably need to re-roll the left-rear fender, because it was cutting my sidewall significantly as I started to push it in the corners.

I am going to be the first to forecast the damage.

Bearings.

Why?

Cause when a piston lets go, there is SMOKE and OIL everywhere! And pistons don't clank.

Rod or Main? Hmmmmmm. Because of the clanking, I predict rod.

And I am not being a Negative Nancy. Any motor that does that is toast! Soryy. :( If it just didnt run right, I wouldnt post predictions. Curious to see what the damage is.

Wow, after reading through all of that only to find out that the pin got pulled on the grenade and tanked the motor... I'd die inside after all of that!

Steps in the right direction:
+ I sourced a complete, running (currently in a wrecked SS), 92k mile EJ22T locally as my spare to be swapped in in the next few weeks to get back on the road.
+ Found clean 2003 WRX seats (the blue cloth/black alcantara ones) at the same time form a wrecked 40k mile wagon. These are height adjustable too!
+ clean-ish trunk carpet!
+ Kartboy front and rear endlinks
+ Kartboy rear subframe lock bolts
+ Kartboy front & rear shifter bushings
+ NOS STI GC8 rear lateral links (my car has the old style lateral links that had prevented me from upgrading the rear endlinks)
+ complete six volume set of 1992 Legacy factory service manuals from a used book store (so many diagrams!)

Also still awaiting installation:
+ front inner fender braces
+ front lower H-brace
+ JDM foglights (this is going to be more of an undertaking than I expected and is pretty far down the mod list at the moment)
+ correct rear mudflaps

Still need to find/figure out:
+ backlit boost gauge and mount
+ 3rd gear sychro is still iffy...
+ Whiteline ALK?
+ wiring of OEM foglight switch

I'm going to turn the boost down to around 12-15psi and take it easy on my spare while I tear down the blown motor to see what exactly I broke. Assuming I haven't damaged it too badly, I'll be building it back up for higher boost usage. This will be a longer term summer/fall project for my uncle, dad and I along with body prep and painting.

Also, a couple of pics of that track day:
Image

Scratching our heads about how badly the fender was cutting the sidewall of the left-rear tire. Engine failure shortly thereafter.

Finished out the day in my mom's Cooper S (I have no idea what she was thinking).

Progress!

I finally installed my front fender braces today. Between those, various suspension items, shifter bushings and seats, she'll be coming back from the dead in much better shape. The front seats are in, but I need to do some dusting/cleaning before I get some new interior shots. The seatbelt setup is suboptimal from the get-go, but now they bind a bit without the guides on the seats (and, of course, they're worn out after 224k miles). I'd like to put 4-point belts in this car. Does anyone have experience with 4-point belts + harness bar/cage setups?

Once I have my interior all in an buttoned up, I'm going to have a B-pillar bar made so I can install 2" or 3" 4-point harnesses into my car. I despise the belts Subaru put into these cars!!! Should happen within the next 2-4 weeks.

Do some reading on 4/5 point harnesses with and without cages.

Not saying you should or shouldn't do it, just saying to inform yourself on all the issues first. Then you can decide on what's best for you and your passengers.

Also, Whiteline ALK.
...time to go sell off some scuba gear, etc. I seem to have developed a suspension itch since the car's been out of commission. I'll note, preemptively, that these are not for dropping the ride height. If anything, it'll probably sit higher, but I'll have a lot of experimenting to do.
