outer tie rods

ok so i figured how the everything fits together. found ball joints from Moog and inner tie rods from Moog as well. but cant find a name i can trust for the outer tie rods. should i just buy anyone.

Alot of people are gunna tell you to buy OEM for this kinda stuff.

Moog makes outer tie rods for our cars.

MOOG Part # ES2974 Right Hand - $55 each
MOOG Part # ES2975 Left Hand - $55 each

SUBARU OEM Part # 34140AA030 {Inner Tie Rod End: Left and right} - $32 each

What are you calling the inner and outer tie rods?

There's only one tie rod. There's the steering gear box rod.....

the outer has the little ball joint in it. the inner connects to the part in the boot. what bolt is that at the end, the one that is stripped

I hate to disagree, but Subies indeed have inner tie rods/ends. They unscrew from the rack behind the dust boot, and thread into the outers. In fact, they're set up like just about every rack & pinion equipped car I've ever worked on.

I stand corrected. I was unaware that those unscrewed from the steering rack. I wonde how difficult they are in coming off. If I new that, I probably wouldn't have wrestled so much with the damn things on the Impreza. I would have just replaced them.

They're not awful to get off. I haven't replaced them on a Subaru, but often you can just use a large combination wrench or crescent wrench on the flat spots to unscrew them. Some cars don't have clearance for a wrench, and then you need a special rack & pinion tool, which isn't too expensive if the parts store versions fit. Once you pull the boot back, it'll be pretty clear.
