So you were trying to use the R180 rear diff but keep from having to swap to the R180 knuckles?
I thought I had heard that a hybrid axle could be made, but it must be hearsay.....

^ I don't have any WRX axles here to experiment with, and can't afford to try that route. Basically, my friend who rebuilds trannys and drivelines all day every day has never seen an 8 ball outer CV joint. I searched for two months to get a yay or nay, and found neither. Such is the game. That's hot-rodden baby.
Tonight's work:
Finished the bumper beam. And the foam.
Anyways, she's fitting together nicely. The beam still lines up up with the factory holes which is amazing givin the amount of pretension in the bumper beam and how far off it was before I welded it. She sucked back together nicely though. The foam wasn't a big deal either. The good ol Stanley 99 took care of it.
work.

I don't have the money to buy all these different axles to experiment with. It may be possible with some other axles, I just don't know. Anyways, I already have '04 STi knuckles on hand, and one red 2 pot on the way. I need one more caliper, rotors and pads to be all set.
Finding rotors for subaru 2 pots on STi knuckles was a pain. DBA makes one and so does subaru for a one year only JDM STi or something like that. The issue is the 190mm parking brake vs the 170mm parking brake.
If the SVX had vented instead of solid rotors(18mm thick instead of 10mm), I could redrill a set of those for cheap, be we weren't so lucky to get those here in the states. The SVX has the larger parking brake apparently.
Jamal has a very nice thread about subaru brakes on nasioc.

Last night's progress. Got some work done. Doubled up the braces that go under the fender. Got one of the overlays on the side of the car. Finished the bracing for t he upper core support. Did some work to my cast elbows for each end of the intercooler. They are between 3/16 and a 1/4 thick, so I tapered the ends and smoothed the seriously rough casting marks. Not that it is a big deal, but it was some late night mayhem.
Also, I received my first of about 6 quarts of reduced base coat. This stuff covers like crap so it will take a lot. 4 coats to cover.

True, and the mountain of work I'm staring at looks rather large
I've had a couple years to think about how I would have done it differently. The other end of that is how much more time it's taking to so it how I want to. Being the end of the semester isn't helping either, especially since I'm actually at school now, instead of merely a physical presence.

No real update, but I did take my last final today, so it's game on.
I did pick up a man-sized compressor, so now I can get serious. Craigslist is a beautiful thing. The funny thing thing is, half-way through wiring it the power went out for a couple hours tonight, so I couldn't do anything even if I wanted to, lol.
This thing is sooooooo much quieter, its not even funny. Now I can spray with an HVLP gun and actually maintain.

Spent the day running around, and had a little time to throw at the car. The R180 fits like a glove as expected. The old style companion flange fits perfectly, along with the bracket. I'm having an issue finding a parts guy that can get me the correct circlips for my axles, but that is minor.
As we speak I am playing musical coilovers to get everything together in the rear of the car.

Not a whole lot to update on. Finishing the semester and getting an internship have consumed most of my time. Got an internship though, at Berry Plastics in Lakeville, so I'll be able to spend more time on the car. I don't start until the 1st of June, so I have two weeks to spend some quality time in the garage. w00t
Got my coilovers worked out and the hubs on the car. Battery tray was also shaved.
I have to take this parking brake back apart, I know. She didn't go together like planned... I need some drum brake tools, because it is a pain in the ass.

Thanks for the kind words!livestrong14 wrote:That cooling duct looks great! What did you use for it? Awesome progress keep it up!
The hood vent is a fiberglass piece I found on ebay from a company out of Tawian. It was actually a dummy vent that was enclose, and I cut the center out of.

I noticed 2 pots out back are the knuckles ABS?
I'm gonna be doing a STi RA tranny / R180 Rear diff swap when I plop in the built motor & want ABS R180 rear knuckles.
The R180 Rear knuckles I have are non abs, just like the 2pot R180 knuckls I had.

Depending on how things shake out.....I am anticipating having to replace the transmission at some point and time, and swapping to a 6mt has been a possibility, and one of the things along with that has been the rear end and all that jazz.....

Everytime I start to consider a 6-speed, I always figure that the stock 3.9:1 R160 would do the job just fine. Unless you drive like a jackass, that is. (Or want Brembos too.)
Am I missing something?
