Car won't start after clutch replacement....

Post by skatedees »

I have a EJ22 and I just put everything back together. When I try to start it, the starter goes "click" and that's it.
I checked the battery, and it's good. I don't know where to go from here. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks :?

There's signal wire on the back of the starter. Make sure that it's completely plugged in to the starter.

You just removed everything that makes the car start!,back track all of your steps as the problem obviously resides there if the car worked before.

You may have knocked the starter around and the contacts might be shot and that was enough to stop them from making a connection.

I had a problem with the starter and sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. The contacts were worn and not making a good contact with the plunger. Try tapping it with a hammer. I know when it doesn't complete the circuit it just clicks which is the sound of the plunger moving but since it's not completing the circuit it won't engage the starter motor.

Thanks, I will check out the starter signal wire, and I'll give her a little hammer tap.

I also just noticed that the fuel pump isn't coming on when I turn the key...... I didn't think I unplugged anything involving that......

How can I check that out?

Thanks for the replies......

I also found a connector that isn't connected. But I can't find anything to plug it into.

Right by the passenger side headlight. There is the plug that goes into the headlight, then there is another plug underneath it. What is it and where does is plug in? Fuel pump maybe?

I really appreciate the help.......

I think I had that same plug on my 90 NA wagon and never knew what it was for.

I wouldn't worry about the fuel pump until you can get the engine to turn over.

So I made sure the signal wire was attached and I hammer-tapped the starter, with no result.

I couldn't find anything out of place, or anything not connected. And she worked like a charm before she went under the knife.

It has been sitting for a while, 3-4 months.

I wish cars had a backup pull-start feature......

Are you sure you reconnected both grounds that attach to/near the starter?

BINGO!! I definitely missed one. Gosh, I've been staring at this shit all day and didn't see that. (slap forehead)

Attached it and it started up like nothing happened.

Thanks everybody!

Pretty sure that is the sub-fan short connector.

Do both fans come on when the radiator fan kicks on, or does only the driver's side? There should be a jumper connecting that, which makes both fans come on together.
