Is the bell housing fitment the same on that? Is that before they switched to a different style for the 2.5?
Parenthetically, does anyone know when exactly that switch was? I'd love to put in a nice new transmission with higher road gears.

It's a bit different, but it might work if the necessary holes are correctly aligned... Here's the first gen layout (obv. off an NA):
The pic is off ebay, link will die in a few days... sorry.

There's always been a big question of whether a late model automatic will work in the Legacy. Will it fit? Yes. The torque converter will bolt to the flex plate, and the bell housing will mate to any EJ engine.
Anything older than a 98 should work as it's still phase 1. Newer than that is up in the air, as no one's really sure what changed in the electronics. Are the transmission plugs the same? Are the pinouts the same? That kind of stuff.
There are a few older threads here on the boards that discuss it but nothing that ever came to a definitive conclusion. I think Josh knows the most about this but it's all been posted before.
You should try it and let us know if it works!

Electronics are different, even if the plugs are the same..which I doubt.
Over on the USMB this has been covered
(which is my source for this info....not from personal experience.)
Good luck,
TD

Thats my main question, will the newer (post 98 ) bellhousing bolt up to the older EJ engines? It doesn't look like the bolt pattern/layout is the same. I did a few searches here but they were fairly inconclusive… no definitive answer on the mate-up.
I'm mainly wondering about the MT; he's interested in the AT, but they should be the same, no?

Yes, it will bolt up. Phase 1 had 4 mounting locations, Phase 2 used the original 4 locations, plus 2 or 4 more (I can't remember).fishbone79 wrote:Thats my main question, will the newer (post 98 ) bellhousing bolt up to the older EJ engines?
Also, the phase 1 lower starter mount was a stud with a 17mm nut. phase 2 was a bolt that went into the block.
Todd, any links to the threads on USMB? I really need to start reading that forum more....

Correct.SubaruNation wrote:so the rear diffs will not be compatible?
Probably not same year, but most likely same generation, plus the axles (stubs) may be different.do i need a rear diff out of the same model year outback??

one final question if you guys (anyone) wouldn't mind.
the Tranny in my TW is dead, and i am wondering if i can throw a transmission out of a N/A automatic (4eat) of the similar years (92-94) in it with no problem.
Thanks alot

Yes, the tranny will work - same diff ratio 3.9. You'll also want the TC, flexplate, and starter from the NA, I believe.
I haven't confirmed whether an NA TC/flexplate works w/a turbo tranny.
I DO know the TC and Flexplate must match.
