I'm sure some of you have had the issue of being able to "churn butter" with your shifter levers before, but mine has a stupid amount of play. I'm having a hard time finding parts, so I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I've torn into the car a bit, and this is what I found.
The bushing that the ball end of the shift lever sits in has a ton of slop in it. I was under the assumption it's pressed into that part of the linkage and cant be replaced, requiring you to replace that whole section of the linkage. Am I wrong?
What I decide to do was to get a low milage WRX take-off. The part between the "A"s in the diagram needs to be swapped for a WRX piece however.
If the part you circled is worn that means that the cup (under "C" in the drawing) is really gone. The cup is supposed to take the wear.

Yeah you're right. I knew somebody could explain it/picture it better haha.
So a complete wrx shift linkage would work then? That'd be sweet and make things easy.
Yes a WRX shifter will fit, but you need EVERYTHING in the drawing. The front piece (between the "A"s) is hard to change while in the car, but some have managed to do it. I did mine at clutch time, so it was cake.

Here are some threads that may help...... and if it were me, I would just buy new from factory. IMO it's not that expensive. Part numbers are in the links.
I'd be willing to bet money your plastic cup bushing is fine. It's well-lubricated and hidden from the elements. I've never seen one in need of replacement.
It's your A bushings that are worn out. They're exposed to the elements, and in most cases, have rotted away to where they're just plain gone.

That's what I was initially thinking but after removing the shift boot, plate and the rubber seal to get a good look at that cup, I saw that there was a little play. Sucks because a simple bushing job is turning into replacing damn near everything
I picked up a linkage assembly from a GC8 over the weekend for $5. I don't know if it's any different than a wrx linkage but for five bucks I couldn't pass it up. The cup is in way better shape than the one out of the legacy, but before I order new bushings I wanted to make sure it will work.
