Rear LSD conversion problems!!!

I've got a 93 ss with the 4eat in it...the stock rear diff is a 3.900 open diffrential, I put in a rear LSD diff from a be (3rd gen outback) which was a 5mt and is an r180, according to my transmission chart that I recived from another board member the 5mt that was in the BE leggy that I removed the lsd from also used a 3.900 ratio. But for some reason it almost sounds like the rear is binding! I can only drive the car in front wheel drive or the entire car vibrates like hell. Anybody have any ideas??

Yeah,you probably have the wrong ratio,mistakes happen - probably somewhere down the line from you.check your diff by turning the the input flange.When you turn the flange does it take just shy of 4 turns to put out 1 turn of the axles? or does it take over 4 turns? this should tell you quite easily.

The Outbacks generally had 4.44 diff ratios for the Automatics. The 5-speed may be a 4.11.

Any chance you have the original tranny avl. to get its part number?

Also, is the BE a '00-'04? If so isn't that 2nd Gen as 1st Gen OBs were '95 (in name only) - '99?

yes i do have the tranny code and double checked it. It says its a 3.900 its an 01-02 outback. I says that the 03-04 outback and lgt 5mt uses the 4.111 ratio.

Anybody know what the outback automatics use for sure because I have a 4.444 jdm trans that I need a rear LSD for.

This SITE shows the Ring and Pinion #'s for that tranny:
37/9 = 4.11.

It's for an '02.

This SITEshows it was a 3.9 for the '01-02/same part #.

(And it was 4.11 for '00 w/a different part #)

so acoording to this site none of the 3rd gen legacy outbacks (01-04) uses a 3.900 ratio? All 4.111? As far as 5mt goes ?

Do you want to know what websites and documentation have to say about models/years and such or do you want to know what the diff in your car is?

I have the spda chart printed. If I could have a chart with every trans and ratio AT and MT that would be great. I just need to know/get the right ratio (3.900) in my car. Thanks

I would tend to concur. The outbacks don't tend to have the 3.90 final drive ratio.

There should be some markings on the differential. Take a look at this. This is for the 97 impreza, but the markings are probably going to be in the same spot. Once you have the numbers, type them into google.
