That spinning thing that makes all of the cool noises. OE and Aftermarket.

td04 turbo shaft play

Post by ericem »

I read some up and down play is fine, but this one gets pretty close to the housing actually might be hitting the housing. Has 120k km and I paid $145 CDN locally shipped. He told me no shaft play..... My dads theory is when it gets really hot the thing should have no shaft play at all because there is some expansion.

I paid $140 shipped for my TD04 almost a year ago and it has 2,000 miles on it in like new condition. Zero shaft play, looks brand new. I kind of got a good deal on it, was actually surprised the guy on NASIOC took my offer.

Sorry to hear that it has shaft play. I don't know anything about shaft play though. I have another TD04 that I'm gonna be selling with a little bit of shaft play that came on my forester engine.

Great. My friends tell me they have never touched a turbo that didn't have up and down shaft play. Doing some reading and it seems like it is almost impossible to get a TD series turbo with 0 shaft play at all unless it is reallly really low mileage like yours.

So up and down is ok but not in and out?

Yeah, I've been told by several people that in/out play is NOT good but a little bit of up/down (some call it side-to-side) play is okay.

slight shaftplay is no issue at all.

i turboed my old 2.0l mk3 jetta with a brand new gm-1; the turbo had absolutely NO miles on it but it had as much play as my 40k tdo4.

side to side is really nothing unless its hitting the housing. remember, the shaft spins in a cushion of oil and not taking any unsual deflection.

in and out play is bad.
