Well, I just got set back a bit. My painter, a friend since I was 4, will be out of town for the next two weekends.

I was probably being too optimistic anyways, since there is still a lot I have to do before we are truly ready to spray. I need to get refills for the used filter/dryer we scored, clean more, do some more grinding, cut the windshield out, and much much more.

I also just ordered a spot blaster for a couple areas, and a bunch of paper. Doing the bodywork right is owning me right now. $60 for a quart of the right primer, lol. I still need a catalyzed acid primer.

All I can say is.........it hurts. :unamused: This shit is killing me. Primer is a little ridiculous.

*Three more quarts of base and a quart of activator, and a gallon of wax & grease are not shown. Neither are abrasives, paper, tape, sand, poly, compound, pads,.............

I'll start priming after a little blasting this weekend.

Sanded the hood down to bare metal and hit it with three heavy coats of polyester primer/surfacer. It will get sanded down a ton, namley to take care of the light hail and outies the hood has. That material is essentially a sprayable body filler, which is really nice for light dings.

Image

I have about 8 hours into sanding the Rustoleum off of this bumper cover. I'm really regretting spraying it with that crap last summer. I'll never use it again.

The filter/dryer setup I'm borrowing. I had to put new desiccant in it, but thank goodness the two filter elements were in good shape. When I asked the guys at Northern Tool if they had any silica gel desiccant, they looked at me like a pig staring at a wristwatch.

Image

Lastly, I wrapped my uppipe, mostly to keep my power steering lines from melting. I'd rather do some Jet Hot, but the PPG man has got me down these days. I might end up cutting it apart this winter anyways...

how did you get that heat shielding wrap to look so damn good?

I tried it on my turbo and it def does not look like that.

Killer build so far also,

I want a UHEV sticker for my car ;)

I haven't gotten a sticker yet. I want one that looks just like the one that comes on Hondas, lol.

As far as the wrap goes, soaking it in water for a half hour is key. Much more workable, and it keeps the dust down. I always wear a mask anyways. Planning out how you go about it helps too. As you can see by the amount of clamps I have, there are two pieces.

On a different note, those two little rust bubbles are actually through the metal on the left rear quarter, after spot blasting it. I'm working on patching it right now. Lame. Rust is so deceiving.

^ I'll be plotting something over the winter.

My buddy and I did some discussing this weekend, and it was quite the large blow. In the end, the is no way that this thing will be done before winter. I am running out of 70 degree days to get his thing sprayed, and then install and wire. My garage is heated, but its not practical for painting since it would blow so much dust and dirt around that it would waste a lot of time and material .

So, the engine bay will be top priority, so I can put the powertrain together and get it running when it gets cold. Once it warms up in the spring, the exterior will be shot, sanded and buffed as soon as possible.

We could rush it, but it's not worth it. I did that last time and had to make way to many compromises. I've invested too much time and loot into this thing to cut any corners. But don't worry, I will come up with some extra stuff for the car. Like the budget yet effective washer and IC sprayer setup for the trunk that I am getting parts together for at the moment.

Thanks for the support and praise everyone.

Yeah, don't rush it Dan. Take your time. My damn car has sat for way too long. I'll be lucky if I put more than 500 miles on it in 2009.

I'm in a similar boat, but behind you. The way I see it, I could rush it and do it again in 5 years or take my lazy ass time and be done with it for, quite likely, the last time.

I've had a busy weekend, and a lot of work leading up to this point. Most of it wasn't picture worthy.

We sprayed the bottom of the hood and the engine bay. They turned out pretty decent. Dirt is a constant battle when you can't clean every nook and cranny of the frame rails and what not.

Anyways, the Chrysler PXR looks sharp and I wish this camera would do it justice.

Huge thanks to Marc Tuttle for taking a day off of work to come and spray. This wouldn't turn out nearly as nice without him.

I kind of paintbooth-etized the garage. Two 20" box fans in one window with over-spray arrestor media over them. The main door got covered with poly, and I used two furnace filters for the incoming air. Bugs are really annoying.

All bare metal was hit with a catalyzed acid primer, then sealed, and finally base and clear. Also, 3M urethane seam sealer was used in key areas.

Thanks guys.

One gripe is that the american shells aren't stamped as nicely as the Japanese shells. Notice the ripply strut towers. The wheel arch on the drivers side, along with areas on the firewall get a bit wavy. Not a big deal since the price was right, but being a geek I notice these little subleties.

Yeah, I will no longer compare our builds—I'm not putting anywhere near that kind of work in. Almost makes me want to, though—that's going to look sick when you're done.

I would not wish this kind of torture upon anyone else. I could have been driving the thing six months ago if I would have straight swapped everything over. Having a body tech for a friend is good and bad.

I keep telling myself that, lol. Don't think that I haven't had my doubts. That session did turn out nice though so I'm confident in the rest of it.

I just need to take extra car when putting the motor, tranny and everything else in. Also, I have to rework the pipeset once again. I'll be covering everything I possibly can when I tack weld pipes together in the engine bay.

After doing some more tuning on Derek's car (whitelegacyguy) I need to go the same route. A boost threshold of 2500 rpm and 15-20 psi at 4k with a GT37 is hard to pass up. The looks you get when that thing is whistling around town is quite amusing. Besides, should I really go through all this work without making 450 whp on pump gas? :smt077

Dan,

Do you still plan to upgrade your G2 to a G4? I would highly recommend it if you have any doubts. I've been very impressed with the changes in the G4 platform. The additional little tweaking abilities you have.

The G2 & G3 may or may not have had this information, but it wasn't logged. I can see engine rotation acceleration & deceleration, individual cylinder knock events, mass per rev. They still don't have closed loop boost control though...at least not yet....

On board ECU logging is nice. I've got it setup to a digital input and a switch I had previously been using for driving lights that I removed. At 10khz sample rate I can get about 30 minutes worth logging in. That's about what the PCLink will do.

Here's some recent log files

Yeah, I'll change to the G4 software even if I have to pay for it. I can't do it until the car is wired and I can fire it up.

I'll have to set up the on board logging too. I won't use that right away since I don't like to run that long without looking at a log, especially under load. It will be nice for low-load tuning though. Have you tried the "Quicktune" yet?

10 kHz seems a bit excessive, doesn't it? I do like the specificity of the knock events though. It would be nice to know if one particular cylinder is causing trouble.

I can take a look at those logs tomorrow, or maybe later tonight. 3-8 class is pretty lame. I've never had such a wacky schedule with so much down time. I wish my car wasn't an hour away during the week...
