Did a little searching in these forums, I found this:
http://bbs.legacycentral.org/posting.ph ... e&p=274337
Also, the DOHC vs SOHC thread:
http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic. ... light=sohc
Basically what I got from that is the 2.5 SOHC and 2.5 DOHC heads are good for different reasons, but the 2.5 SOHC models are "phase II" heads, and the coolant passages don't line up with "phase I" blocks, and
Regarding your question about whether your phase 1 SOHC intake manifold would fit phase 2 SOHC heads, I would imagine they wouldn't but I haven't tried that combination. Let us know

Very quickly, because there is everything you need to know documented already.......
You cannot use your EJ22T intake manifold. You must use a manifold to match the heads you choose.
Phase 2 SOHC heads will not work with a stock up-pipe because they hit each other. The "corner" of factory turbo heads, and derivitives, is cut out for up-pipe clearance.

I have read a lot on this forum but I have a ej22e not the ej22t so there is not as much for it listed also I saw in one thread that the intakes for the phase 1 heads all interchange I did not relise the ej25 sohc head was phase 2. I am trying to get out the easiest way posible the dohc head swap seamed like I had to change more and like coolant line timing belt covers tensioners ect.
Thanks for the info I am still reading about it also

Which ej22? The ones in the first gen legacy are dual port, just like the turbo heads.
Only the phase 2 ej22 has a single exhaust port per head.

EJ22e
To clarify (hopefully JC will forgive me).
Phase II EJ22e started in 1999:
Per wikipediaand cars101.com.
- 1995 was last of the dual port exhaust EJ22e (and 1st year of OBDII for the Legacy)
- 1996 was the last year of the non-interference EJ22e; 1st year of the single-port.
- 1997-1998 EJ22e - interference and single-port, along w/internal and head upgrades (but still Phase 1).
Phase II EJ22e started in 1999:
Per wikipediaand cars101.com.
- EJ22e Phase I = 1990-1998 for USA.1999 2.2 Liter Phase 2 Engine Enhancements (from endwrench article H-4 and H-6 service): All 2.2 liter engine for 1999 are the Phase 2 design. The 2.2 liter Phase 2 engines are a SOHC design, with a newly-designed cylinder head.....

That information refers only to DOHC heads. If the intake bolts line up on DOHC heads, they are phase 1.calvin6199 wrote:......was reading on this forum and thought i saw that if the intake bolt holes lined up it was a phase I is this true if so mine is not phase one
IIRC, all SOHC heads have offset intake bolt patterns. Phase 1 and phase 2 are both offset, but not compatable with each other.
