Legacy WRC construction

Post by 93forestpearl »

I couldn't find a previous posting of this, so I though I'd pass it along.

Thats awesome! I'd seen a vid for a modern STI buildup for rally, on jalopnik, but this is cooler since I have this car's younger brother.

No power tools either! Crazy. Now I feel better that I don't have any.

I like their method of installing the tranny, with no jack. Too bad I can't do that by myself, lol.

Great video, thanks!

That transmission install method does seem very low budget (un-Prodrive), that's how I did it.

The body's are probably also seam welded as well as caged. Doesn't look like much for corrosion protection, though.

Who need corrosion protection when you junk the shell every rally?

The development that goes into those cars is by far above and beyond anything that any of us do here. Sure, turbo systems have advanced significantly in the last 15 years, among other things, but at 180,000 pounds for a finished example at that time shows just how much goes into the car.

Look at the custom aluminum knuckles they use. If the tubular rear crossmember for the Hewland rear diff they use. The wiring is all military spec. Straight-cut dog-engagement Subaru gearboxes most likely were not as common place and reasonably priced back then.

I wish I could take the time and space to develop a car to that level. Completely re-engineer the chassis, and then some.

I'll re-post the thread Matt Monson started here of the tour a gentleman in Europe had of Prodrive and all the pictures he took of modern day WRC car construction.

Of course, there's no point in corrosion protection on a racecar shell. The point was a minor one in the production car's favor.

Love that livery, too. I prefer it to the 555 even though I love that dark blue.

Some day when I have the time to go nuts like that, I want to have it acid dipped, and then E-coated at a OEM plant. That will probably take some serious bux though.
