Apex3 wrote:Apparently swapping to the other direction was as easy as twisting the bulb mount, it wasn't in the glass, so I would assume these would also be in the bulb mount. They made it that way because different European countries drive on the left side, but Germany doesn't.

Which brings me to my next question, wouldn't it depend on what country the headlights came from? Not all countries in Europe drive in the right, I think most drive on the left actually.
That's almost exactly the explanation I've heard. I'm told the same EDM glass is used in British and German market cars. Supposedly the flutes and lenses should be the same, most of the adjustment is in the bulb mount... does anyone know for sure what the physical difference is? I know the light pattern in the lens itself makes less difference then most think... you can prove this to yourself simply by turning your lights on and twisting the bulb in the mount while pointed at e.g. the garage door. You'll see that the pattern (if your lenses are clean!) is mostly determined by bulb orientation. Dirty, yellow lenses make a round blob regardless...

*EDIT* except on the high beam.

93 Leg-c - Maybe it's not a bad idea... If it's not too rainy tonight I'll pop the old bulb back in one light and leave the new one in the other and compare (then switch so you can see each side). I never actually did that, but I can tell you the bulbs make a noticeable difference. I have measured the luminosity of the silverstars but I have no idea where I put that data.

Yes, on some lights it is easy to change the beam pattern. For example, I have a set of Morette lights for my '98 bk. Switching from LHD to RHD beam pattern is as simple as loosening the bulb, turning the bulb full clockwise or counterclockwise and then locking them in place.

For jdm projectors for second-generation Legacies, the headlight has to be taken apart and modified internally in order to effect a LHD beam pattern. These housings can accept HID projectors with modifications.

But for our first gen lights, the light pattern is part of the lens themselves. Even if the bulb were re-positioned, it would not change the overall beam pattern but it could skew it and make it even worse.

This is why trying to install HIDs in first gen headlight won't work properly unless you modify the lens itself (whether it be glass or plastic lens).

That's what Steve (evolutionmovement) first started doing when he embarked on his project of installing Hella 90mm lights in the factory headlight housings. He had to grind down and polish the inside of the lens to make them as smooth as possible to be distortion-free so the 90mms would have the proper beam pattern.

As regards headlights from Europe, yes, thanks for that reminder because it does matter from which country the headlights originate from. And if Timo or others can source them for us, they have to make sure that the headlights are for LHD cars. For example, I believe Germany is LHD while England is RHD (others can chime in to confirm which countries are LHD).

OK, so they actually do ship different lights to the correct respective country? Good to know.

When I fiddled with HID's I ground and polished all the flutes as well... what a pita.

The mainland of Europe drives on the right side (LHD)
Only he UK and Ireland (both Islands, look at a map ;) ) are RHD!

UK doesn't even have our currency, so it's not really Europe at all :-D

Europe is LHD.

In the past, Board members tried to obtain the lights and other parts by using the part numbers. The obstacle that arose is that if the part number is for a non-US part, SOA (Subaru of America) does not have those numbers listed so they say they cannot get those parts.

However, if you have a contact, say in Europe, perhaps they may be able to get them.

It might be cheaper to get just the EDM glass lens from Subaru, and then bake your lenses off and just swap the glass in. I am having to refinish my headlights about once every year because they start to get foggy. The beam pattern and brightness are great after the refinishes. I think that is where most of the improvement comes from and not the reflector. I think that some of South America got the glass headlights too. When I was in Peru, all the legacies had nice clear lenses with city lights. South America could be a cheaper and easier place to source these from.

The contours of the rear housing will prevent that. The glass headlights don't "wrap around" as deep as the plastic ones do.

I just spent the last 20 mins compiling a list of the countries around the world and seperating them by which side of the road they drive on. You only want to buy headlights from a country which drives on the right side of the road because the beam patterns will be the same as ours unlike the beam patterns of countries which drive on the left as they will point higher on the left side blinding oncoming traffic.

I'm gonna guess that since (as per my eBay.de search) Legacy III is 98 to 01, that Legacy IV is 02 to ... EDM years of course.
