Looking for a new crankshaft

Post by Legacy777 »

The journals on the ej22t out of my engine has seen better days. I could get it turned, but it's really not worth it IMO.

The turbo and non-turbo cranks are the same, and if I can get a good used crank, that would be my preference, especially since I already got std sized bearings. If you have one that you think will work, let me know. I am probably going to be kind of picky :), so if you have or can get pictures and possibly take some measurements on the journals I would appreciate it.

Thanks
Josh

I can give you an old EJ22 one from my garage when you come up to Boston, if you want. Looked to be in good shape, but I never measured anything. It does have about 250k on it. That is, if it isn't rusty. Might be a PITA to get on a plane, but I don't know.

Steve,

Can you take some pics of the crank.

I don't know about the ej20 crank. Someone else is going to have to confirm that.

Lee.....not sure if I want to do that, but am still looking a couple other options.

Oh, man. Yeah, but that means it's coming into the kitchen with me, which means it will stay there like the pair of pistons and rods and a melted exhaust valve unless you want it. I told myself no more kitchen-engines when I bought a house, but they're slowly weaseling their way back in.

That's alright Steve. I'm actually leaning towards just buying a new crank. With the money I'm putting into the other stuff....it's probably just a better idea to buy a new one.

Yeah, that's probably the best plan. Mine's most likely got a layer of rust on it by now anyway. I just figured if I was seeing you, I could hand it over since it's just another thing taking up space to me.

My machine shop build sandrails out of older subaru engines and has tons laying around. I got a replacement crank, rods and pistons for $65 (although that's the friend price).

did you see all the ones on my photobucket? that's all i got i can get some of the journals to show you the lack of wear. also when i measured them up i got consistent measurements on the various journals which names escape me right now. oh and i haven't looked up what "in spec" measurement is but since they were all with in a few 1000th's i figure them to be A, O.K.

im on a computer now so ill post all picks i got now.

I guess I did not see a link to your photobucket website. Was it posted previously?

Yeah if you can get some pictures of the journals that would be great.

Thanks for the pictures. I think I'm going to pass. The journals look to be in about the same shape as mine.

I do appreciate you putting the pictures up though.

What can you tell by looking at them they have some discoloration all the way around on a few journals. Oil starvation? Or what? I didn't see any cracks and they are all smooth w/o any grooves.

Re: Looking for a new crankshaft

It's the discoloration on the journals. It doesn't look bad, it's just normal wear I would assume. With all the other stuff I'm doing to the motor, I'm probably going to have to buy a new crank to stay with std sized bearings. I really don't want to put a crankshaft back in unless it's polished or new/near new condition.

You should just polish your own crank.Polishing should not take away enough to need new size bearings.Tolerances can be a tad loose without you ever knowing the difference,in fact too tight is more of a problem.

Yeah, that's probably true. I'm planning to bring the crank by the machine shop on Friday for them to take a look at it.
