3 pics of the AWIC setup

Post by dscoobydoo »

I know that AWIC is not the standard, but this car was not a "normal"car per se.

So I went a different direction, but needed something new to work on and test the limits.

So here are a few pics of the final set-up.

And thanks to Jake for his usual touches on the project.

Jake did fine work, the photographer, not so much.

Guess we'll see this car on the road soon?

Nice, I have that heat exchanger too. What size reservoir tank are you running? Or does it not have one?

Curious to know which pump and exchanger you got, and where you got them if you don't mind. I've got an AWIC core and I'm debating whether or not to go that route when I do my head swap.

The pics suck, I know, but I only had my phone.
The pump is one from a mustang Cobra ( used an AWIC also) Bosch pump.
The exchanger is a generic one from an AWIC supplier. ( it had a filler cap on the top that was removed)
I don't have a separate reservior tank, as the JDM set-up only had a intercooler core, exchanger and pump.
Besides, the core has the filler point at the top, and the exchanger is so large, I did not think there was a need for a separate tank. The water circulates constantly, and the core is so large and thin, that it cools very fast.

I plan on getting the core temp gauge to work, and there is a spot in the bottom of the exchanger for a temp probe.
So between those two spots, I should have a good measure of the water temps.

That is pretty nice site. I wonder if this core would work well with a stock mount turbo.

What size fittings came on the AWIC core? On their site, they say 1/2" That seems a little on the smaller side. The stock system uses about 5/8" ID hose.

I couldn't use it with my 40R, but someone else could have a nice setup with a stock mounted turbo.

One could have the holes tapped for a larger fitting. I'm curious as to the flow rate of the stock pump, and if the 1/2 NPT fittings would run into choke flow with that pump, or whatever pump is used.

Yes, the in and outlets at 1/2".
I have no idea of the rate of flow of the stock pump. And since it is a two-speed pump, I would love to know the rates of both speeds.
But with the filler cap off, I could see a pretty good rate of flow movement in the upper core, so I am not worried about the flow of the system. Also since I am running a heat exchanger almost three times the size of the stock one, and a pump that is much larger than stock, I think the set-up will handle way more than the turbo will ever put out.

But I will get both temp locations up and running in a bit and try to log the differences and that of ambient air temps.

The stock flow rate is pretty mild. The pump is rated at 4 gpm @ 6.6 ft of head. My pump is rated at 11 gpm at nearly the same ft of pump head.

The pump I'm running is giving me about 5 gpm or so of actual flow, and based on the system curve, head is around 10 ft of head.
http://www.jabsco.com/files/18510_43000_0607_03_03.pdf

I did some testing with the pump I have and just the intercooler....it flowed about 5 gpm using 5/8" hose. There will be some added restriction with the exchanger I have, but since my testing was not closed loop, the current setup will benefit from some residual pressure on the suction side of the pump.

I saw the exchanger on their site a few days ago, but didn't pay attention to the dimensions. Holy fuck it's bigger than I thought!

You can use a Opel Corsa C Combo Engineradiator for the AWIC.

AWIC is standard in my legacy but the original Radiator is too small for my performance, so i discard the original radiator.

ORIGINAL

Image

The PRoblem was to find a radiator which has the same connections like the original.

There a 3 Radiators: 1. Audi RS2 ( 2 small )
2. Fiat Seicento ( perfect but smaller then original)
3. Opel Corsa C Combo 1,2l

I found one on ebay for five €uros :D

i produced two adapters because the opel radiator connections hat 35mm diameter and the original 18mm

new AWIC Waterradiator

in contrast to the original radiator, i think the new bigger radiator makes my car fly faster :D, the turbo spools faster and the temperatur is lower.

at first i want to buy the radiator of frozenboost but it is very expensive to shipping it to germany :(

how does the new radiator change the speed of your car? is it like my system? faster spooling turbo?

FYI, I was able to mount the frozenboost heat exchanger using the brackets from the AC condensor. It took some work, but I think it'll be worth it for cushioned mounts and serviceability.

GM stopped selling Opels here sometime in the 70's. They sold them through Buick dealerships and they had no idea what to do with them as they didn't remotely resemble the boats they usually sold and the kind of customers that would like an Opel wouldn't think to go to a Buick dealership. Ford made the same stupid mistake with the Capri and the Merkur (Sierra), selling them through Lincoln-Mercury dealerships. Recently, GM attempted to relaunch the neglected Saturn brand with aging Opels. Now they're going to sell several models, ironically, as Buicks. The Insignia is definitely going to be sold as a Regal. I kind of hope they sell a turbo AWD version as a Grand National.

Anyway, scooby, you can import junk parts from Europe. A little harder to go hunting by sight, though.

That car looks beautiful.

Ok, after running this for a few days, my temp gauge is definately seeing the effects of the AWIC in front.
The gauge is reading about 2/3 up ( compared to halfway before)

anyone else experience this with a AWIC>?

At first i want to use a icebox together with the bigger watercooler, the icebox would be filled with crushed ice befor a race or dyno. But until now i had no time to build the icebox, i have created some pictures how to build and use it. i think it gives u more boost, i hope i can build it at the end of the year.

another idea i want to do is to replace the original hoses to stainless steel hoses like an FMIC, but it is very complicated.

kind regards

Hey what was the model year of the Opel Corsa which ran that radiator? The Corsa is/was sold here in New Zealand as the Holden Barina. Parts for those should be easy to find. Does it specifically have to be from a "C" series Corsa or will a radiator from an older Corsa work as well?
