Code 35 and Code 49

Post by Jester808 »

Hey everybody, I have a couple of questions regarding these 2 codes I pulled from the Legacy. I've had them for awhile now, they never stay on, I pulled them from stored. They come on every now and then and don't come back once I turn the car off. They only appear when pressing on the accelerator, either on boost or not.

Code 35 being the Canister Purge Solenoid Valve. Should be a simple fix on that one, however, I want to make sure it might not be the Canister itself? As opposed to the Solenoid Valve? I am unsure since the CEL doesn't remain on. I figure if the Solenoid Valve is bad, shouldn't the CEL be on at all times? Or am I misunderstanding how the Canister Purge system works? (probably that one ).

The Canister has developed holes in its old age, and the lines have cracked. I JBWelded the holes, and replaced the lines with new ones. I did this quite some time ago, long before these Codes, so I don't think that should have any affect.

----------------

Code 49 being the 'Use of an Improper Air Flow Sensor'. I have no idea what this could mean.

I have Cleared these Codes, only for them to come back as stated in the manner above.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :-D

The purge control solenoids do have a tendency to go bad. If you have over 100k miles and it's never been replaced, then it's probably time for a new one. Most people relocate it to a more accessable area when it's replaced, as they are a pain to get to in the stock location. I believe the ECU will only throw a code when it senses a fault in the electrical circuit, so I doubt it's the canister itself, I could be wrong though. When mine went bad, the CEL would only flash on occasionally and go off, it sometimes would not leave a stored code.

The "improper air flow meter" code is usually set when the wrong MAF is used, but I guess that's pretty obvious. You are running the stock metal MAF, right? If I remember right, the ECU uses the BLUE wire to check for the proper MAF, it could have a break in it. The MAF could be bad . Have you tried replacing it with a known good one? Also try clearing the codes first and see if it comes back.

(I just read where you said you cleared the codes already) Check the MAF wiring around the plug for broken or exposed wires.

Anyone, feel free to correct me if anything I post is wrong, it's been awhile.

Alex,

Brian is correct regarding the canister purge solenoid. It's likely the solenoid is on its way out. When mine died on me years ago, I got random/intermittant CEL's. So I'd just go ahead and replace it.

The code 49, that'd likely be in the wiring. However, I suspect it's a false code. I'd suggest replacing the purge solenoid, clear the codes, and then drive the car for a while to see if the code comes back.
