Never changed a clutch before - good option?

Does this look like a decent replacment for
the OEM clutch? My throwout bearing's on
it's last leg and I'm looking to replace it so
I figured it's time to replace the clutch too.
It has 218k on it and I'm pretty sure the lady
said it was the original clutch.

It says its fits a 94 Legacy L. Has anyone used
this kit before?

I've never replaced a clutch. Is this everything
I'll need to get it done in this kit?

That kit does not include the clips that connect the throwout bearing to the clutch fork. I'd suggest replacing them. The old clips may be good, but until you get in there, it's hard to know.

I see. What all extras like that should I get? I'm not
familiar with what should probably be changed out.

I'm guessing at least 2 and 5 from that diagram, but
are there any other parts, that after 218k miles, will
probably be worn down and need replaced?

I appreciate the help. I'm trying to do some research as
to see what all these parts do haha I'm unfamiliar with
manual transmission...transmission in general, I guess.

Do I need to resurface the flywheel? And would that just
be done at a machine shop?

If you get the kit you pointed out, I would get both clips 2 & 5 just to have them. They shouldn't be much.

It looks like from the pic that the new kit has a new pilot bearing. I've heard of people having cracks in the clutch fork, but that may be something you just have to check when you take it apart.

I would recommend against resurfacing the flywheel. The non-turbo subaru clutch setup doesn't work well with a resurfaced flywheel since it changes the engagement point with the clutch. Others resurface them, so you'll just have to make that call. With that many miles on the engine, it would probably be a good idea to replace it. You may be able to find a low mileage Impreza flywheel or may be able to find a new one for not a lot of money.

That would be good, cause I dont have a lot of money to spend.
The only Subaru dealership around is a Mitsubishi/Cadillac/Buick/
Subaru dealer and Subaru is their new one haha I'm gonna bring
them this picture cause their pictures are terrible.

Now is there a certain brand of flywheel I should lean
towards?

Sachs is a decent aftermarket brand.

OEM is always good.

If you have the time, I'd suggest one of the online subaru dealerships if you need anything that isn't very cheap. It'll likely be cheaper, even with shipping.

I checked subaruparts and they only sell everything as a unit for $400.
Subarugenuineparts only sells turbo flywheels and they're $200.
Subarupartsforyou wants $250 for just the flywheel and pilot bearing.


Now when you talk about getting one from an Impreza
is that any 2.2 Impreza of any year?

If you get a flywheel for a 2.2 impreza it should be the same. The prices for the exedy stuff seem pretty reasonable, so I'd just get the clips from the dealer.

Got the clips on order I'm just worried about the
fitment above all else. It seems pretty low priced
for a flywheel compared to all the rest I've seen.

If it truly is an Exedy unit and you can reference the part # on Exedy's website, it should be good. You can double check with the vendor that they list the correct part #. Short of that, you've done about everything you can do to make sure it's the right part.

I found a place that sell the right part and has the part
number, but it wont get here in time so unfortunately
I think I'm just gonna have to go Autozone. It should
fit ok. As long as the pilot bearing has to be tapped in
it should be a good fit, I believe.

Well, I got the engine pulled. The clutch looked ok
until you looked at the sides. It looked like they were
trying to split open. Either way, next weekend I'll be
putting the new seals and stuff and throwing the new
clutch in Thanks for all the help, man.

The clutch turned out really soft I've heard
it's the springs on the clutch itself that determine
that and I figured it'd be at least close to as stiff
a pedal as it was before. Kind of a bummer...

I was also wondering about this clutch kit also. There have posts on other forums saying that exedy oem clutch is inferior and rattles compared to factory clutch. this was on newer wrx and can be read about here http://www.rexnet.com.au/forum/index.ph ... e__st__170 I was wondering if there are any visual differences between factory clutch disc, pressure plate and flywheel vs. exedy oem 15010 aftermarket clutch and flywheel part# FWSBL01 .

Mine seems to have stiffened up considerably on the
trip to Georgia and it hasn't had any issues with rattling
or anything. So far so good Exedy actually makes
the factory clutches for Subaru from what I've heard.

Visually there are no differences between the clutch
components that I could see and they ended up fitting
perfectly. I ended up using a flywheel from Discount
so I cant help you there.
