Ok after getting a new job and having to commute 30+ miles one way monday thru friday I've had plenty of time to play with the cruise. What a frustrating thing this beast is. Some days it's a hopeless tease, feeling it pick the speed setting but immediatly dropping out of cruise. Other days it holds the speed setting fine but there's a really jerky motion to it. Tonight I saw it really straying from the set speed.

A thought occoured to me tonight, my speedo cable needs a good cleaning. The speedo bounces pretty bad on any given day. Could that possibly be what's causing my cruise to act up?

It could be. If the cruise control computer has trouble regulating speed it just shuts the system down as a safety measure. If the speedometer needle is bouncing around, the reading it's sending the cruise computer is probably getting the same speed readings.

So tonight on the way home from work the cruise would not set at all and the speedo needle was rock solid the whole time. I really wish I had a way to read what the cruise module is seeing.

I got around to testing all the circuits involved that the service manual suggests.

Went through the service manuals list and got to the vac pump test. My tester is not showing the resistance the book says for the pump itself. Book says somewhere around 500 and my tester's showing 6. The other 2 resistance checks were spot on.

Gonna test out the couple at the bone yard next time I'm through there, I might tame this beast yet!

I finally got another cruise pump to try out. This one's resistance values matched what the service manual said.

It's been in for a couple days now and I'm still having issues with cruise not wanting to be usable. I haven't come across the car surging anymore while on cruise however just getting it to not instakill the setting is still there. I can hear the cruise unit click when I turn it on and it clicks again when you set the speed and clicks when you kill the setting. It usually double clicks when I set the speed.

I guess I have to check all the parts again and start checking wires. My nagging suspicion is it's a bad ground. Hopefully I'll figure this out.

They are, but depending on how much grease is in the boot (if there's too much), the extreme angles of the axle can cause the excess grease to ooze out.

This would be much easier if I could hook up a select monitor!!
