Supposed JDM engine aquired but?

Post by icrman »

So far the exhaust port flanges have some nice clear silicon rtv on them, looks like the water pump the same, as well as the heads.
So when I go talk to the outfit that sold it to me on monday what should I say?

I'm gona say who ever worked on the thing didn't know a thing about what they were doing for one.
Looking for more advise. Thanks

The problem is you never install a head with RTV silicone on the gasket. And who would ever use clear RTV on an exhaust flange gasket? They will all surely leak. That is the problem.

Took it back, down graded to a 2.0 for $100 less. The 2.0 looks way better condition wise, will know for sure when I check it out better.
It wasn't supposed to be a rebuilt, just another JDM deal that was tossed into a shipping container I suppose. Who ever last worked on it didn't know alot. Maybe it was a takeout they did too, who knows for sure.

Ok, well at least it sounds like you got one that is going to be better off for you.

What engine was the original one supposed to be? Also was this from Foreign Engines in Lynnwood? I've always wanted to pay them a visit.

No not from them, they wanted $895 for a 2.0, this was in Auburn. Did a leakdown test today
#1 is 0% not a sound scary stuff, #3 is 5%, #2 is 17%, #4 is 0% and not a sound, looks good so far, not a roller cam, and shows a little wear on cam, pretty clean inside. Doing the cam seals and pump so far.

is your leakdown test results pretty normal for a jdm motor?

Not sure what would be considered normal for a JDM engine, the results are very good for any piston engine.
And much better than the first one I had and checked.

17% on 2 seems a little high, but aside from that it looks good.
