4EAT Band adjustment!!
I know,..i know,..this has been covered on numerous occassions.
My question is to find an easier way to adjust this bugger!! I have a 90' Legacy and i can see the locknut and screw pretty clearly from the engine compartment. Reading the "How to's" it looks pretty involved,...not that i can't do it,.. for just a simple nut and screw!!! I read that if you remove the starter it can be cut out most of the steps,...basically all of them. Is this true on the 90 Legacy's or am i going to have do it the long way.
Re: 4EAT Band adjustment!!
anybody??
Re: 4EAT Band adjustment!!
You can see a few pictures of where it's located, and I don't think removing the starter would make it any easier.

Re: 4EAT Band adjustment!!
I do remember that the guy who did do it the way via the starter had a 98' model. Unfortunately, it does say for models 90'-92' you have to go through unbolting the engine stop, disconnecting @ the Y pipe, crossmember removel,ect....blah,blah,blah. Well,...i did want to inspect my exhaust system anyways,...so i guess i'll make a day of it and just kill two birds with one stone.....
Re: 4EAT Band adjustment!!
If you have a shorty wrench you can adjust it by feel, and not remove anything. That's what a trans shop did on my car when I was running the automatic trans.

Re: 4EAT Band adjustment!!
I did the band adjustment today. I was able to do it the short cut method ,and bypass dropping the tranny ect.... The only things i had to do was disconnect the battery, remove the vacuum booster hose, and unbolt the positive cables from the starter. I used a stubby 17mm combination wrench and an 8mm ratcheting wrench. THe most work,...and it wasn't much, was loosening the locknut. I placed the stubby 17mm (closed end) on the nut ( I don't know if a stubby 17mm ratcheting would work, do to the thickness of the ratcheting end) and used a another wrench, between the tranny for leverage to crack it loose,....no problem. I marked the front face, and a small spot on the top of the adjustment bolt with a white paint marker, and a spot on the tranny as my starting point. I also marked the opposite side of the bolt with a red marker for reference, with some practice i was able to get her adjusted.....i turned it almost 3/4 of a turn counter clockwise. I re-adjusted it one more time after a test drive, the second time it took me less than 10 minutes to disconnect ,re-adjust,and re-connect. She shifts alot better,...i plan to change the fluid next.
Re: 4EAT Band adjustment!!
Glad to hear that adjusting the brake band worked for you! Let us know if changing the fluid helps too.
Thanks for following up with the results.
