Any Difference between a 97 2.5 gt , and a 98 2.5 gt

hey guys! my mom has a 97 2.5 gt auto. I just bought a 98 2.5 gt 5-spd. I noticed that the engines run a bit differently. mine seems a big louder. is there any difference between the 97 and 98's i knwo the hp is the same did the torque change? or could it be just because mine is a 5-spd? any ideas?

In subarus I noticed 5spd's are always less refined from their automatic counterparts. A little louder and more vibration in the cabin. It doesnt bother me since the more I can feel the car, the more I like it.

Didn't the 2.5RS switch from dohc to sohc in those years? Did they do the same with the GT?

Phase II SOHC 2.5L's were introduced for the 99 model year line up.

The 99's were still the DOHC engine. The phase 2 engine was introduced with the new body ctyle - MY00.

That's just true for Legacies and Foresters, right? The Impreza 2.5RS got the phase II engine in 1999, I think.

the foresters switched with the imprezas in 1999.

the 2.5 gt leg in 1996 had a bit less power and i believe required premium??

but 97 - 99 were all the same phase 1's.

Yes, the 1996 Legacy 2.5GT made a little less power and required premium. In 1996, automatic Outbacks also had that engine.

It would be really easy to look under the hood of each car and see if the spark plugs are at a 45 degree angle or in the middle of the valve cover...
Or count the number of circles on the timing belt cover (2 for sohc, 4 for dohc)

Also remember that autos adjust timing at idle while 5 speeds do not.
